so my 85 c4 has a bit of a chatter when i accelerate. not at idle or any thing like that. it seems to come from the right side.
its a manual transmission 4+3. i also notice a puff of smoke immediately after the chatter stops. my thought is that possibly my oil sending unit may not be pushing enough oil to match the acceleration.
the puff does not occur every time and the chatter does not happen under normal acceleration just when i step on it while already moving.
The oil sending unit is what gives you your oil pressure. It has nothing to do with the oil flow.
Where is the smoke coming from? Tailpipe? Under the hood?
The chattering could simply be if your if timing was off which also brings up what octane level gas are you using?
the smoke comes from the tail pipe. i use midgrade gas most of the time. not always mind you though. i have been reading where timing seems to be a root cause of chatter.
i guess my question would be, how hard is it to adjust it?
Theoretically the computer is supposed to take care of the timing. At the base of the distributor you'll see a clamp with a bolt going down in to the manifold. You loosen, not remove, that bolt until you can rotate the distributor to adjust the timing. But you will need a timing light to set the timing. Before trying that try using premium gas for a little while to see if that eliminates the chatter. If not you may need to set the timing.
As far as the smoke it could be bad rings, dried up valve stem seals, etc. If it only happens once in awhile its not a concern. If you feel ambitious pull the spark plugs and see what they look like. That will at least give you an idea as to which cylinder(s) is the culprit.
