I was waxing the 96 and buffing off the hood and I heard a noise near the back. Walked back and found that the hatch had popped opened on its own. I wasn’t anywhere near either of the releases buttons

Bummer. Good luck with the fix. Nice car. Looks exactly like the '96 LT4 car I used to own that had the same problem. Maybe you have my old car.

Live well,

Thanks for the complement.

We are going to the car show in OC this weekend. The car is ready otherwise. I didnt want to get into any involved repair on this problem this close to the event. I copied a work around I saw in the other thread on this issue. I tied a nylon string line to the aux release cable and ran it under the hatch sill trim and up behind the seat. We’ll get through the event tugging on that as needed. I pulled fuse #45 to prevent the module from popping the hatch randomly.

I checked both hatch switch functions and each of their relation to neutral safety switch and the interior light switches in the doors and everything there works as it should. We have never used the remote FOB and its nowhere near the car.

I know gremlins on these cars can ruin your day unannounced including things like VATS. We wont have a problem with that because we had VATS turned off in PCM tune years ago.

If messing with Pass Key proves to be daunting, I might just leave fuse 45 out, disconnect the plug at the hatch solenoid and run my own hatch release circuit and bypass Pass Keys ability to play games. I could either install my own release button or perhaps utilize the existing ones, again bypassing anything related to Pass Key and hatch release function. In any event I will leave the pull string tucked away for use if needed.
