Has anyone had this problem? Replacing fuel pump on my '87, I decided to go ahead and replace the whole fuel sending unit. Got a replacement from Rock Auto and it won't fit. Goes into the tank but not quite enough for the upper plate to sit flush. I measured it along side the original unit which fits fine and they seem identical - maybe a fraction of a millimeter longer if at all. Can the metal parts be bent? That just doesn't feel right. I'm about to simply use the old one (and I procrastinated long enough to be unable to return - anyone want to buy a sending unit cheap? :-)

Pictures? How about the orientation of the fuel sock/strainer?
Yikes! Pics need to be way smaller. I did consider the orientation of the strainer but got conflicting input. I have tried it both vertical and horizontal and what it feels like is the unit is just too long - but it isn't (I don't think). Taking the photos, I did notice for the first time that the new piping seems to be slanted a bit left (in the pic). nut...
Thanks.
Thanks for the reply. I've tried it both ways and the unit is still bumping up against something. I did notice for the first time, looking at the photos that the length from the bend in the float wire to the float is longer in the new one by almost 2cm - but that doesn't make sense since it the older one that fits. I'm close to putting the new pump in the old unit but I did want to replace the whole thing. Oh, well. Thanks again for the reply.
I "think" I bought the same stainless steel sending unit you did. The attached post describes what I had to do to calibrate. I had no problem with it fitting down in my 96. Dan
I know it’s a bit too late, but had same problem with mine.
Maybe we can help someone in the future with same problem.
The half moon bracket that the pump lays into, you have to bend it.
Reducing the diameter of the half moon shape.
That is hitting the plastic baffle inside the tank.
No tools needed, very easy.
