My LT1 ECM went south because the engine would die for no reason after hitting a bump. I could hit the ECM and it would cause the engine to stumble and sometimes die. I also could not communicate with it with my laptop. Bad ECM bad ECM.... :nono:
When the ECM on my 87 went bad I had a hesitation problem. It was severe and would make the car undrivable. The service engine light would come on.If I shut the engine off and waited for a minute or too the code would clear and I could procede.Check your ECM and and if it is a part#1227165 that is a good indictcation that might be the problems. Those ECM's had a driver problem.Replace only with part #16198259,these are the upgraded ones.Did the trick for me! Good luck.
My OBD doesn't give me a readout, the service engine soon light just stays on. The idle is never stable and usually between 600 and 1200 rpms. How plausible is it to do that replace the cpu w/ a carb thing? The car also runs really slow... i have to give it a LOT of gas to keep it from dying when i leave a stop light. Sometimes the service engine soon light turns off (RARELY) and the car jolts forward and kinda dies then jolts forward and starts running normally. My mpg reading is completely inaccurate. (o instant mpg; 99 mpg average) Any ideas now?
I'd say that's a good start on symptoms of a bad ECM. Although before just ripping it out, wait for further advice. How long have you had the car? Maybe a one of the chips in the ecm is faulty? Have you taken it to a shop? They would be able to tell you pretty quickly. Hope you get it worked out.
How do i get @ the ECM to see what the part number is? I also have an aftermarket hypertech power chip. It's been in for about 5 months and hasn't given me problems before. I've had the car for about one year. I have taken it to two shops, neither of them could get a readout. Also, i can't turn off the car and wait a minute or two to clear the code. It stays on. And i don't really consider it a code because it doesn't say like "3-3" it just constantly stays on. God i wish my car wasn't a piece....
If I'm not mistaken, your ECM is under the PS dash (someone more familiar with that model should chime in and tell you exactly where) First thing I would do is to pull the codes to see what's going on.
I have an 86 conv and while working on the ECM I had the memcal out and removed the EPROM. Afterwards the EPROm would not seat properly into the memcal and gave the same conditions that you have.
You stated that you have a hyper chip installed so you have an adapter that the memcal is plugged into. You could try removing the hyper chip and putting the memcal back in so you are back to stock before buying a ECM.

Your car isn't a piece of sh..! be patient you'll fix it and be in love again :D The ECM on your 86 is as mentioned under the passenger side dash.Remove the kick plate under the dash and look up you'll see it.Do you have any kind of manual for a removal description? If not e-mail me and I'll give you a detailed description. As already stated lose prom chips etc can be a problem but if it is the old part # see if you can borrow a updated one first and try it out.If money isn't a problem and you plan to keep the car I would just replace it as the new ones ARE better built. As for the problems you are experiencing they may or may not be ECM related I would suspect it myself.
