why you should do your own work...
One of the guys here at my shop bought a nice black 96 Vette about a month ago. He comes in Monday and tells me he dropped it off to the dealer because he had something leaking from the motor. He got the car back last night, it was the water pump. Well they really stuck it to him. $600 to replace the pump. They hit him for $266 for the pump and $334 in labor.. That's BS I know I can get the pump for $150 and it should not take any longer then 2 hours to replace it and that's counting the time to drain the coolant.. I told him next time let me know so I can look at it before he takes it any where.... God this is why I do all the work myself... I really hate dealerships..

Just wait until the opti goes out now! Everyone knows that if you go in to change the pump, you had better change the (likely drenched) opti while you're there!

The more tools I gather, the less my mechanic will see my car.

They should have advised him to let them do the opti while they had the pump off!! :boxing

The price sounds about right for a dealer:
(150) Pump
(140) Labor
(XXX) GM Tax
(XXX) Vette tax
_________
$600.00
Yep, it adds up!

$600 is about the rate from dealerships. I don't think it's unusually high.
changing the water pump is a bit complicated for some of us :yesnod:

It is nice to be able to do all your own work. Can you imagine how much we would have spent having to pay somebody else. If it is not underwarranty I do it myself.
