DALLAS: OFFICER CRASHES AFTER CHASE
(FAR NORTH DALLAS, July 21) -- A suspected drunk driver hit a Dallas police car as the officer was chasing a man in a pickup in far north Dallas. A corvette hit the patrol car at Vail and Frankford Sunday night. The driver was given a field sobriety test and then taken to jail. The officer is okay. He was chasing a man who left the scene of a domestic disturbance call. The suspect's pickup crashed a block away from the officer's collision. Police say the suspect will be charged with evading arrest and possibly face family violence charges.
Man, that's not right. Granted, drunk drivers need to be locked up, and the key thrown away, but wishing crippling injuries or death on someone is just not right.
There are a lot of forum members that continually drive 30, 40, 50 MPH or more above the posted speed limit, or drive aggressively without regard for the other motorists around them, and brag about it. Should bad things be wished upon them too? I don't think so.
Irresponsible behavior is irresponsible behavior, no matter which way you cut it.

If some jerk off is driving around in a way that endangers others? Driving in a way that could cause a station wagon full of kids to be run off the road? Swerving dangerously into an oncoming lane where he might hit an innocent bystander/driver? I'd be happy to see him flip his car and get seriously hurt. People that endanger others out of their own selfishness/stupidity need to be taught the kind of lesson they will always remember - period.
I'm sorry but I just can't see the point of view of having mercy for those "virtually" waving a pointed gun around with their finger on the trigger and a bottle of Jack in their other hand.

"It's too bad the drunk driver didn't get hurt much worse." [/QUOTE]
Just this past weekend, my 18 year old son's friend, (also 18) was arrested for DUI. My son explained, he would not have been caught, but for the fact that he hit a tree. I say thank God it was a tree, and not an innocent person. Loss of licence ( and his car) is easier to live with, than taking a life. Drunk driving is no accident. Although I am grateful he was not hurt, I am not sorry he was caught, and that he will be punished!

The drunk 19 year old that hit me (and killed 2 of his passengers) got messed up pretty bad. I never found out if he was arrested though. I'd imagine so. I've got a nice disability in my left knee, right wrist, and some huge medical bills thanks to the stupid bastard.

Sorry, offer, I cannot agree. The cop was performing his duties.
Pursuit is often the only answer...what if the car is stolen? Plates will do you no good.
What if there is no chopper (not everyone lives in Los Angeles...)?
What if the perp skips town/state/country? You think he's gonna' sit down, have another beer, and wait for the SWAT team to show up at his house?
No, chase the dupes down quickly, spin 'em out, shoot them if you have to, but GET 'EM! Right now!

:iagree: BUT,dont just pick on alcohol.thats just easy.we have mad mothers for that.
how about the 81 yr olf that hit thwrong pedal and killed 10 people last week.
or the 72 yr old that fell asleep in ak last week and killed 2 firefighter on harleys that were with a group of 5 touring from stateside.
i don't condone "drunken" driving, but all to often people are burned at the stake for having an after work beer and being involved in an accident that was no fault of theirs.
every time theres an accident of any kind if theres a beer bottle in the ditch within a mile of it it gets reported as "alcohol was invlolved."
it says "The driver was given a field sobriety test and then taken to jail".
i hope the jurors are not as closed minded as some of you guys.
i tell ya what it sounds like to me,the cop flew through an intersection and got hit.
luckily for him the guy that hit him had a beer after work

:iagree: Time is on the side of law enforcement. The truck the cop was chasing crashed just a block away. Injuries? Property damage? That driver was still running! He probably didn't even know the Bronze was outta the game. He was scared, angry (domestic issue) outta control and desperate. The cop knew it was a domestic call and doubtless had access to info on the perp. It would have been a routine arrest just hours later after everyone cooled off. But that's just not very exciting now is it? No murderer, no bank robber, no terrorist...why the need for a high speed chase? There are no absolutes to be sure; but IMHO hot pursuit is a bad policy. This cop made a bad choice.

You've got to be kidding! Blaming the cop for the drunk's behavior? What the hell kind of logic is that? That's his job. If they break off all chases except for major felonies, what kind of message does that send?
