Posing and pretending is sending false signals, it would only serve to annoy real corvette enthusiasts who will then laught at you.....and dupe those who simply don't know (which is much worse).
With all due respect, I disagree. If you're just driving down the road, who cares what people think? In this case, without actual interaction with others, the posing is implied by the viewer of the act, not the person perpetrating the implied act (of posing).
It's like when I would take my mother-in-law's XJ6 up the street to wash it, or get the oil changed (I know, kiss azz  ) People would compliment me on "my car." I couldn't tell them fast enough, that it wasn't my car, but my mother-in-law's. Then I'd offer them a sit, or a ride.
This is the same concept, whether the car is real or the situation of ownership is real or implied...
So what if I was driving a replica Grand Sport? Or what about a genuine Grand Sport I borrowed? Doesn't matter. They look the same. It's what you do with the car that matters. If I'm lame enough to think the fact I'm driving a Grand Sport, genuine or otherwise, is going to help me pick up some chick (please don't tell my wife :lolg: ) or impress a buddy, that makes me an a-hole.
If I use the fake to make dough off someone who doesn't know better, that's different. Then, I'm a crook.
But the act itself, the act of owning a replica or driving someone else's genuine article, is not a crime or something someone should be ashamed of. Some of us just can't afford, or don't afford to own the genuine article, but like the look. So we make our own. I say "Big deal."
Ya know,MinnesotaWhite is right, thats not a clone its original and I like it. There are some clones that are real good looking also and I like them too. What I don't like is someone who happens to have a grand sport LT4 engine in his vette and swears up and down that he owns a Grand Sport. Then they say the only difference is the paint job :U
I'm not a clone...I just upgraded the paint scheme...

:iagree:
My 87 is due for a paint job. I love the GS paint scheme, and while some of you may be able to just sell one and go buy the real thing some of us can't. When I can afford to paint it, it's getting new red paint with a black stripe a la GS.
Like DaBo said, "It's my car I'll do what I want"
Oh, and Cheap Vet and Minnesota White........Love those cars guys
joeveto, you bring up some very good points and make a good case :) it just goes to show that even though two guys can disagree, it can be done in a very tasteful and classy way, hats off to you!
:_dupe: Well once again, everyone has opinions Just like %*#holes everyone has one!!! :nono: Do what you want to your car! If you start listening to people like member we should just change over to communism and forget about freedom of choose! Who made him GOD of how your Corvette should look!!! Re: CLONES???????? (vettefast)
:iagree: If thats what you really want go for it! If I did what everyone told me I would be a priest driving a short schoolbus. It's your car, no one on this forum is making your vette payments! Do what makes you happy!
Thanks for the compliment, Brad. And honestly, I think you and I are closer in opinion than we know. I frankly, prefer to leave my car (C4) stock. My 77, on the other hand, I had to tweak (the engine) because it was just too much of a dog.
Ironically, someone before me threw L-82 badges on the car. An L-82 had, what, 20 more hp? Big deal. I left the badges on, but should anyone ask (no one has yet) I tell them the car is not an L-82, and explain how you can tell. Frankly, the badges look like crap with my car's color, but I don't want the holes in the hood.
You know, had I really wanted to be honest, before rebuilding the C3's motor, I would have put Hyundai Accent badges on the car, because that's about how fast it was.
I really feel "badging" is bad when someone would put ZR1 on an '85, just as an example. Thats the kind of stuff that just doesn't make sense, and would be an outright major misrepresentation.
By the way, to the previous post about "corvette god".....that is something I'm surely not! I could never earn such a high distinction   :chevy

Re: CLONES???????? (1990CORVETTE)
Of course this being a free country each of us is able to do whatever we want to with our cars but I think that re-badging a car is wrong and I would not do it.

Re: CLONES???????? (joecaver)
If you like the GS or Pace Car paint scheme, go for it. Even just the visual clues like hash marks or stripes I could accept ('though I'd never do it to my car).
Rebadging, though? What's the point????? Sure, I'd love to have a ZR-1, but sticking ZR-1 badges on my car's butt doesn't make it one and a Corvette guy would spot the fake in a heartbeat. So, who am I trying to impress?
As someone has said, each Corvette is desireable as it is...it doesn't need to pretend to be something else.
Oh, and Cheap Vet and Minnesota White........Love those cars guys
 Thanks!
My car has three phases to it...first was interior...that's custom and I got huge compliments (both Vette and non-Vetters)...next was exterior (mainly because it was "free") and now I get compliments from both Vette and non-Vette folks all the time on both!
Last will be some go-fast and keep her cool parts (tranny cooler is a must).
I'm all for folks adding a custom touch to their cars...it's when folks go overboard is when it's a no no.
I've seen lots of C5's already with the new 2004 Z06 paint package on them (one of my friends did the stripes in black on his red C5)...that doesn't make it a clone...just makes it look cool :D
Here's something much worse. Some one racing a real Grand Sport, etc and wrecking it. Why on earth would some one race in the Silver Classic at top speed knowing there is a chance fo wrecking?
To me that's real dumb.
Why not build a clone.
But at the same time, why do people build clones and go around saying it's the real McCoy. That's pretty stupid.
So it all depends on what your intentions I guess. But in the end it's your car, do what you want. Who cares what people think. Most people are not worth talking to anyways...

That happened at a car show I was at. I had parked the car and went to get a bite to eat, but with the lines at the restarunt it was gona take a while. While I was walking to the restarunt I saw a Vette with a big butt ZR-1 air brush on it. As I walk by it I can see that this is no ZR-1 so I move on, mumble something to my party about it and go get food.
This was told to me by a friend of mine who was watching my car.
While I am gone the owner comes up to my car and starts looking it over. He asked my friend who was sitting behind my car if it was his, he said no but he asked if he could answer any questions about my car for the gentleman. He asked why my Z had 2 different sized tires. My friend told him that all ZR-1's had that.
As it turns out it was the guy with the Vette with the air brushed ZR-1 emblem on it. Who ever sold it to him told him it was a ZR-1. That is just not right. That was a bit longer then I ment it to be sorry.

It's only a car. If the guy has the money to buy the car, prep it, and race it, more power to him. It makes him happy to have the only GS being actively raced.
