Better to invest the $$ in the real deal - Race cars / track cars are to me, about the only acceptable clone.
A prime example of this for me is, I am looking for an R/T Chrager - All the time I see "R/T Cloned w/ a 383" hahahaa GARBAGE!!!! If putting 60 bucks worth of emblems and a few stripes on a car made it an "R/T" to them, do they honestly think it would be worth more  'cause they sure are not offering any deals on them, not even as a driver...
I guess in the end, do what makes you happy - that's my 2c

personally, if i were to do a gs paint job, i'd reverse the colors or use different ones.

If an owner wants to add something to their car, that should be their prerogative. An honest enthusiast, like any sportsman, would not do so in order to mislead those less-informed.
It's not what you do to the car, it's your intent that counts. I have ZR1-style wheels on my corvette, but I would never pass my car off as such. That kind of stuff can come back to haunt you .... :yesnod:

I've often thought about making mine a GS clone although in a different color scheme.
Everyone talking about it being a waste of time and money, not true if you need a paint job anyway.
The one clone I would never try or even consider is putting ZR1 badges on a regular C4. There are too many differences and would just not be right.
I've seen 40th's and 50th's with the extra badges on them and I think that's fine. I've seen plenty of LT4 cars with Grand Sport badges and different paint schemes and I think that's alright. Bottom line, it's your car and your money, but if you were to spend the excess amount of money on paint, you would never receive your investment back, especially in today's market.

If we are talking about cloning a GS, or an anniversary edition, I would have to ask "why?" As others have pointed out, you could buy the real thing.
On the other hand, if we're talking about making a Carrera RS, a Boss 302 Mustang, or a Chevelle SS, maybe a Yenko Camaro, or one of the original Grand Sports (not for an instant, am I suggesting these cars are in the same class, this is just an example, so chill), I say "why not clone?" But I say this with qualification:
First off, these cars are becoming harder and harder to find, and when you find an original, it's oftentimes way more expensive than the more pedestrian version.
Secondly, should you clone, you need to be honest about your car, and tell people it's not authentic. Then again, few of us here could pull it off, to the satisfaction of purists, anyway. The creeps who create clones, replicas, forgeries, whatever, and attempt to pawn them off as the genuine article, are what make the whole prospect of creating a duplicate so seedy.
I'm glad we have replicas and kit cars. Because in many cases, such as the Porsche Spyder and the Cobra, there just aren't enough of the originals to go around. :nonod:
And I really don't think the prospect of clones reduces the value of the originals (by saturating the market-an original is an original). In fact, I would suggest replicas help elevate the value of originals, by adding to the mystique of owning a GENYOOOOOWINE whatever.

I get a kick out of the ricers. They buy a 4 door accord and turn it into a low rider with 20" rims, a winey exhaust and tint the windows and they love their cars.
I admire the effort and the devotion. Keep the vision alive!! :hurray:
Bottom line: it has to be explained - which would, or at least should - embarrass the owner. I would never consider bastardizing my corvette, and I think too highly of those who pose them like they're something else :nonod:
