Im finally gonna break out with some cash and buy one this weekand buy an SA2000 racing helmet. So Im looking at <THIS>. Im a cheap bastard and would rather spend my money on my car and fun than a nice looking helmet. As long as it works and is a good deal... Any suggestions?
A helmet with an SA rating is the one to have if you ever intend to do track days. Choosing a good helmet is important as it has to fit comfortably and still provide the protection you may need. Not all brands fit the same for the same size. I found a big difference between Bell and Simpson for the same size.
I chose an open face design as I wear glasses and after trying a number of full-face helmets that were designed for glasses wearers, I went with an open face model. It was just easier to put on and felt right.
Don't skimp on a helmet. The G-Force may be reasonable in cost but you should find out what other racers think about them. Try on other brands if you can as helmets are not sized the same across brand names. I found that Bell and Simposn helmets did not fit the same for the size.
Also, I read a comment is a post a few years ago that I thought was appropriate: "If you have a ten dollar head, then you only need a ten dollar helmet". I would certainly budget a minimum of $250 for an open face helmet, full-face design will be higher but $400 is probably a reasonable amount to pay for a good helmet that will provide excellent protection. Look at both Bell and Simpson helmets. They are the most popular brands and you can find good deals. Try http://www.helmetcity.com for starters.
So what is the advantage of a full face helmet? Other than it being hotter and blocking your vision more.
It is hotter but I like the protection for my jaw and face should I come forward enough to hit the steering column (for example) in a wreck.
I broke my jaw, and lost 7 teeth, on a steering wheel a few years ago. I bought a full face for the extra protection. I do not want to go through that again, not fun. It doesn't get to hot. I don't put it on until I am next in line.
I'm guessing you are buying this for drag racing or something?
Anyways a full face helmet is the only way to properly use a neck collar. In a frontal crash the front of the helmet will hit the collar and reduce the chances of overextending your neck.
I have a Bell M2 w/ the large eyeport, and I can comfortably wear sunglasses with it.
PS. You really need to try the helmet on before buying. Different brands/models fit differently.

Without trying to sound like a smart azz, I wondering why the seatbelt didn't keep you from hitting the steering wheel. I see a lot of accidents in my line of work and usually in only the most horrific crash is a belted driver able to get to the steering wheel or windshield (ie, broken seats or extremely deformed cockpits). Obviously racing produces violent crashes like this, so that could be the case in your accident, but I was just wondering.

A seatbelt wont keep you from coming forward, unless the shoulder strap hits a 'catch' and stops you, even then it may not at sufficient speed.
A 5-point harness strapped into his roll cage should prevent it from happening again, but remember Dale Earnhardt had one on, and his face still hit the column and he died instantly.

Not at all, a seat belt probably would of helped. I was young and dumb, just out of high school, no one really wore seat belts. It happend on the street also, not at the track. I hit the steering wheel, and my head cracked the windsheild. My seat back was twisted, and the drivers wheel was pushed back in the wheel well. Probably got some picks some where of the aftermath at the junk yard.
I can tell you that I put it on everytime I get in the car from then on. Even make my passengers wear it.

Re: Helmets? (McShagger)
I have always trusted my noggin in a Bell - since the early 80s when I was racing bikes too. I looked briefly at the G-Force and just bought a new Bell Mag-4 this January. Simpson is also very good stuff.
Just my $.02. Saving $75 on a helmet vs. the altnerative. I went Bell.

My last two helmets were(are) Simpson. The two previous were Bell.
Having a serious helmet just says something about your committment to what you are doing....
My $.02.
I bought the one you are looking at from http://www.discoveryparts.com for 149.95. Ordered it at 3:21 one day and it was at my front door the next day at 12:30. Had not given my wife a cover story yet...WHAT'S THIS!!! It fit just fine per their measuring instructions. Nice helmet. :auto:
A full face helmet is still going to smash your jaw if you are moving hard enough to make contact with the steering wheel. They're more for preventing road rash when a biker goes down.
