Re: Man or Auto? (C3-C6 Guy)
Depends on what you wanna do. I say Manual but if you want a easy drag race only car get an auto. Much Much easier to launch. Since I wanna do more than drag race i love my 6spd. :yesnod:
I like manual for everyday horse play. Sucks huge in rush hour traffic. I've only driven one auto ('94 coupe) It was good......just didn't give me the smile like my current manual ride does.
Mine is a ZF-6 and a daily driver. I wouldn't drive an auto any car in a million years. I despise automatics. If I was a drag racer, I would have the auto for its obvious functional superiority - on the track. otherwise, its worthless to my ego :D :jester
Only reason I have an automatic is I had shoulder surgery on my right shoulder and continued to drive a standard until my shoulder couldn't take it anymore. That was when I sold my Mustang GT and bought my Vette. When I get my second Corvette...I will be back to driving a stick. Automatics you don't drive...you just point the car in the direction you want to go and push the gas pedal. MAN! I wish my Vette was a stick! Then I could have the feeling of driving my Vette like you other Standard Tranny Vette Owners do!!
I believe it comes down to one's personal preference. Both manual and automatics are excellent and provide excellent performance. No one can argue with a manual being a better choice for sports car driving thrills in autocross, SCCA events, or winding country roads. But for everday traffic with many stops and for drag racing, the automatic is a better choice. I wonder if we will ever see the Tiptronic option now available in Porsche's and Ferrari's? Best of both worlds but without a clutch. I have a gut feeling the C6 may offer this in the next few years.
I prefer a manual but if you plan on driving it a lot in heavy city traffic you'll hate that clutch pedal after awhile. I especially like a manual on twising roads where you can really work that gear shift. An automatic just isn't as much fun. My 90 is an automatic and I sometimes wish it was a manual but most of my driving with it is in the city and it makes driving less of a chore.
I voted for manual. However, I prefer an automatic for daily driving because
of the often congested roads/highways here in San Jose. My 90 coupe is an
auto and the zr-1 well of course no choice........is manual.
I've got an A4. Extremely easy to launch :D And it works well with low end torque :yesnod: Also, it's never bugged me in heavy traffic. Put it in gear and go. Never have to worry  :D
But if you need total control, get a manual :yesnod:
The only thing I can say on the subject is...wait until you have to replace it! We've only had our '92 vette for a week and we already have to replace the tranny. It's a 6 speed ZF and VERY expensive!! We found one that was used (66,000 miles) and it costs $2300 plus installation. Hopefully this will be the only thing we have to replace for awhile!! It started making a noise right after we got it home, and this is our first vette, so we aren't that familiar with them yet. Haven't even had a chance to have fun in it yet!
We have a lemon law, but I don't think it will help in our situation. We knew it had a noise, but both the dealer and my husband thought it was something minor, like a heat shield. This is our first corvette, and just didn't do our homework. We thought we were getting a great deal...the car is beautiful, but just had this noise. The dealer assured us that he had driven it home and back a few times and that it ran fine. Of course, now he won't return our phone calls, so it looks like we have to foot the bill. Really upsetting after we just put out $13,000!
new 700r4 trannys sell for 1700 range before labor too.(but they are FAR more common to find cheap take outs)
i got a quote to change my trans fluid and install a transgo shift kit once in my auto-750 bucks.(nuts)
its the corvette tax.
sorry to hear about your new car failing like that, sounds like someone knew it was shot.a bad driver can tear up any trans, auto or manual.but more so the manuals.in a manual car the less owners the better chance you have of still having synchros. my .02
btw, welcome to the forum! maybe we should start a new thread for this dealer topic.
come on guys, these people need our help! there has to be some legal recourse on a vehicle from a dealer like that isnt there?attorneys from il?
thats just not right. :(
My last car (Mustang GT was a manual, and I loved it when just cruising around) but it was my daily driver and got old sometimes. But when I get my Vette it won't be my daily driver, but will my weekend warrior/occasional track time, I'm leaning towards it being a manual.
Another big decision, I want to make sure I'll be satisfied with everything before spending the money to buy a car.
I currently have a 91 mustang Gt and it's a stick. The parts are definately easier to get (and cheaper) for it than for a corvette. Although this forum has really helped provide a lot of information. The stick in our corvette (1992) shifts a lot different too. It is a short throw shifter and feels very strange. Kind of pops into gear. I guess that's normal. Won't know for sure until I get the new tranny put in. Can't wait!!
