while driving to town today it started raining pretty hard.turned the wipers on and marveled at how they cleared my vision perfectly and how precise the intermittent function worked.the new zeon2s were throwing a cool looking rooster tail visible in the rear view mirrors.you could see how well the air is cut by the body design of the car, keeping the fender tops, the front of the hood, the roof panel and the top of the rear quarters blown dry but the top rear of the hood is dead air.
pretty neat.
i got to wondering why so many people here feel its desicrating a corvette to drive it in the rain?
i mean,i know its gonna have a minor road film on it but that washes right off with mequires gold class soap and water.
no worse then dust from not driving it.
am i missing something?
I don't take the car out KNOWING it's going to rain, but I won't throw myself over the car in hysteria if I get caught in it.. I just hate how a quick shower can make a car look FILTHY , even if it hasn't moved (once it dries)..
Personally, I just don't think it's any fun. I agree though, I don't understand and I am not impressed with the "never been in the rain" claims. What do these people do when a bird dumps on their car, :U and die??
Now that I have a very smooth NXT finish on the paint I take her out in rain with no problem.
Since it is parked in a parking lot it gets dusty just sitting there. And now road grime doesn't seem to stick to the paint either. A dusting followed by a quick detailing removes any minor film and restores the shine.

Re: whats wrong with rain? (mitymek)
Per Gordon Killebrew: "All C4s have been in the rain". Every one of them went through a leak test at the factory and got a heavy shower. :D
We up here in Michigan are hesitant to drive in the rain in the earliest days of Spring because of all the salt that is used on the roads in the winter. The salt is still on the roads until we get a couple of good gully-washers. The salt spray really corrodes things. :smash: Also, listen to the traffic reports during and after a rain storm. You will hear all about the numerous accidents from folks skidding on wet roads. :smash: :smash: I try not to drive in rain cause I do not like having the vert's top up! I have been known to go topless with the heater blasting during a snowstorm or two in a 65 vert I used to own back in the late 60's. Boy does that ever draw attention! :hat
"Never been in the rain!" Let me see if I can figure this out. Rain? Wash car with hose. Hose? rain. Water? water. Salt on roads makes sense. But, um, honestly I never gave it much thought. Life is too darn short to worry about stuff like that. Besides, I never watch the weather reports. Been driving C4s since 1984. Never had one melt on me. Maybe I was just lucky. :D
The main reason I don't drive mine in the rain is that I don't want someone sliding into me. People just can't drive worth a ___ around here.
Same here, alot of accidents when it rains hard.
I also have the Vette perfectly detailed & clean, even underneath, I don't want it to get dirty--just means more work for me.
Besides, I pay good money to lease my SUV, it goes great in the rain & snow.

Rain, Snow, why not - It was designed to be Driven - not put on a pedestal. That's why it actually has a drivetrain in it! Besides - I live on a dirt road. In New England (It snows here, in case ya'll southerners don't know it). They salt the roads - usually for 6 months a year or more. If I wanted to drive a 4x4 all year, like 80% of the rest of the folks in this part of the world, I wouldn't Own the 'vette. Yeah - salt makes things rust. Deal with it. Yeah, the car gets dirty - ditto. Yeah, it's impossible to really detail the undercarriage and Keep it that way, it ain't a show car - it's a driver... As for all the other no-driver idiots out on the road, it would be the same situation regardless of what I'm driving - I'd feel just as bad if some fool slid into my 1978 chevy 4x4 stepside ("almost" cherry condition) as I would with the 'vette - the Truck is worth more than the car! As for My driving - even in the snow, they make Tires for That too! Drive it, and don't forget the Wave :D

Re: whats wrong with rain? (rons85)
I don't drive mine in the rain for the simple reason I like a clean engine bay. My car is almost 12 years old and when I pop the hood it looks brand new. I am not afrad of getting the car wet, I just don't want to have to start detailing the engine, wheels wells, under carriage etc. etc. Car is in show room condition and i'd iek to keep it that way. I bought the car with 18000 mile son it and the previous owner never drove it in the rain, it was obvious to me along with the fact that it was sprinkling and he would not let me test drive it even though i had driven over an hour to see it. I had to go back the next day. This is the only Corvette I have not driven in the rain. I have seen cars that look fairly beat, in fact a friend has a 98 with 140000 miles and he doesn't drive it if it rains. Even though I drove it from Okla to Wisc in a torential down pour to deliver the car to him. The previous owner had the car as a daily driver since new. There is NOTHING wrong with driving your car in the rain. Some choose not to and for a variety of reasons, some good, some not so good. I have had discussion with club members when they comment on cars sitting outside in the rain. Again, they will not melt, rain or even a bit of snow will not hurt a car just sitting there. I'm sure i will hit a point where it no longer becomes an issue with this one either. It is nice to pop the hood and be told I must have spent hours detailing everything, when in fact I have done nothing other than minor cosmetic and performance mods. Justy my .02
Rain suxs thats why I live in California.
Snow suxz, ice storms sux, snow tires sux, chains, etc.
If I owned the rest of the US, I'd rent it out and rent in California.
You only live once why spend your life hiding from the weather.
We've got the weather, the chicks, the high value property, low taxes, the worst air in the nation and thats just the good stuff.
33,000,000 people can;t be wrong?
Actually there is another part of the country that I like but its in Orange County.

:withstupid: :yesnod: :yesnod: ...fruncking moron drivers around here speed up when it rains :mad
I don't right now becase I have a problem with wiper crash that I need to iron out... But I really don't like driving in the rain here in the L.A. area... People here are retards when it comes to driving on wet pavement...
During the last rainstorm we had here I was nearly nailed 3 times while making a dinner run from work, on a 4 mile round trip... Once was a retard that slid through a red light, the other two were idiots driving way too fast for conditions and slamming on the brakes...
It's always like that here... The freeways are damn scary with idiots driving either 40mph or 80mph...
So I'd rather not risk the Vette on the roads when it rains... This Vette took me 2 years to find while my daily driver is much easier to replace should some idiot take me out...
Besides, it takes me much longer to clean the Vette up after driving through the rain... The Caddy just goes through the automatic car wash after the rains go away... :D
