I had my 96 collector edition to the dealer for service engine code that was emissions related. They replaced the selonoid and charged me a bit high for the service. My light came back on two weeks later so I decided to check it myself. The dealership didn't diagnose the issue correctly and I had to replace the selonoid and purge valve. The problem was my canister was breaking down and bits of charcoal were traveling through the vapor return line.
To prevent this from ever happening again I installed a $1.99 lawn mower gas filter inline before the engine.
Now I can see if I ever have a canister issue and spare myself from throwing away money to mechanics that are uneducated.
The more we learn and can do on our cars ourselves, the better off we are.
Your experience reminds me of my 95 that would intermittently start running rough, and pouring black smoke out the right side pipe.
After two weeks, I picked the car up, with a note saying, "No problem found". Well, it did it again about 3 miles from the shop, and all the way home. That is when I bought my own scanner, found the problem in about 10 minutes. At least a scanner and an FSM is "standard equipment" for these hobby cars.
