Default PKE Going Crazy

Ok, I've a 1996 Vette and when I boutght it I had no idea what PKE was so needless to say I didn't get the remote and didn't ask about it. So, I finally learn about PKE but never get around to getting the remote.

One day I was, cleaning up my car, radio on keys in the ignition and PKE goes crazy, the light on the info counsel is on and the hatch keeps popping open, maybe every 20 seconds. It simply won't stop, turning car on and off doesn't help. So, I pulled the fuse that delas with PKE.

Here's where the story gets good: I'm driving in the Ted WIlliams Tunnel, in Boston last nigh during rush hour and . . . PKE light goes on the info center, door locks pop open and the hatch pops open too.

Has anyone had this happen, I didn't even have the fuse back in, how could it be activated. Is there a gremlin in my Corvette?

THanks
for reading.

My PKE is on the fritz, so can't help with problems, but there are two fuses for the PKE. One is the PKE fuse and one is labeled RDO (also controls the radio). The thingie (PKE module) is located behind the dash and you have to take the dash off to get to it. Which is why mine is still not working. I just don't want to be down for a week while I dig into it, so I'll wait until cold weather sets in. Just for grins, you might check under seats and other places and see if someone has left one of the remotes around that could cause problems. There are several threads about PKE, one recent one about how to turn it off using the DIC buttons. You might check that out and see if it will help. Good luck and keep us posted. Also strongly suggest you go to Helms and purchase a set of maintenance manuals for it. There's lots of troubleshooting steps in there. Not cheap, but worth the cost.

I'm almost going to go with gremlins.

Seriously, without a transmitter I'm not sure how to disengage passive mode. I looked through the diagnostics and did not see anything related to activation on its own. You definitely should have the manuals to do a proper diagnosis.

One thing comes to mind and that is a short in a circuit somewhere. Something (the PKE) is sending the signal to the UTD (Universal Theft Deterent) to open these items. The fault on the Info Console may have set a code and you may want to check to see if there is one retained.

You may also want to give Chris a call at Superior and order a transmitter, it should be $94. plus shipping. Program it and see if the problem goes away since you'll now be actively using the system. You can disengage passive mode with the transmitter by pressing and holding longer than 2 sec on the door button of the transmitter with the door open and key out of ignition. It cycles the locks and either turns it off or on, depending on which mode it was in. However, with the transmitter you may wonder how you did without it!
