I am a relatively new Corvette owner. I have recently come to learn about 'the wave'. I think it's pretty neat that we do this. People who ride with me tend to ask if I know the people I when I wave.
Is it a breach of etiquette to wave at other nice cars (i.e. Ferrari's, Saleen, viper's)? I was driving the other day and came across a Mopar Snake. I was tempted to wave but decided to wait to see if he waved. Since he didn't, I didn't. Was I wrong?
Its like ships that pass in the night-They TOOT to each other.
Corvettes wave to each other, or they should.
My 1st vette was in 1968, the wave was a reflex reaction back then. When you see another Vette, you would automatically wave.
Now its a little different, some don't wave for some reason.
Me, I even wave to pedestrians who look at my Corvette in an admiring fashion.
Why not, it doesn't cost anything.

I don't think it's ever a breach of attiquette to be friendly and appreciate somebody elses' cool stuff. I generally wave at other very special cars since we're usually checking each other out anyway. Also in this part of the country there are more than your average number of really nice old cars, rods, etc. due to the fact that more of them survived, since road salt is rarely used here. I always give them a thumbs up no matter what I'm driving. I love seeing our automotive history and heritage preserved!

Yes the wave is a part of being in the family, WELCOME!!! I am a bit like Vader and usually give the standard 80's MetalHead double fingers devil sign!!! Ya know for the full 80's effect...of course blasting RATT or STRYPER adds to the atmosphere!!!!
Anyways.....dont be alarmed or for that matter insulted if you pass a C-5 owner and he uses his or her nostril to wave, it's just that their poopy dont stink like us lowely C4 owners!!!!
Thats a story for another day!!!!!

I used to think this way..but after owning a C5 for about 1 month now I tend to see a lot of Vette owners just don't wave to C5s..
I usually only wave to other Vette owners however I did nod to the owner of a nice vintage Jag roadster last year at a traffic light. And it started a nice conversation while waiting for the light to turn.
I wave at all Vettes; if they don't wave back too bad for them, as I still feel good about doing the right thing to keep the bortherhood alive.
I got a great wave today from a C-5 guy. Really put a smile on my face. To be fair, about the only times I don't get a wave in return is a female alone (I understand) or when the other person is busy trying to keep from scuffing their Vette up. As far as waves or acknowledgement of your Vette from owners of other cool cars, don't expect a response. The problem is they may have spent two or three times what a Vette costs new, and they know there's a good chance that Vette they're looking down their nose at would hand them their azz in a contest of speed. There are alot of warmed over sleeper Vettes around, especially C-5's, that are a match for most P-cars, V-cars and even F-cars, and alot of the guys that own those cars really don't like that.
The short version... Enjoy the freedoms you have today... Wave at whomever you like and don't get caught up in the "status quo" ... You will never know how or where becoming aquainted with someone who shares a passion for cars may lead...
Seems many of us are in our own little world where the car doubles as an office / tele-conference room and noticing what kind of cars are around us is way down the list of priorities...

I waved at a guy in a great looking Viper once as we passed each other... He threw a wave back, so I felt good about it. I think other sports car owners know about the Vette wave, so when they see eachother they might wave, and if they're not too snooty, they'll wave back at us. Like somebody else previously mentioned, why not wave or give a thumbs up, etc. -- it's free!
it is always nice to wave. There are many groups of people that wave, i have belonged to several,-- harley riders, other motorcyles, motorhomes, boaters, little kids and old men--keep on waving- it does' hurt and some people even wave back.
Eons ago when I was a little boy not too long before Corvettes were built I asked my Dad why he waved at other cars (lots of pick-up trucks too) when he was driving. (This was on rural gravel roads in Iowa farm country and were usually farm folks also but not limited to them) He said it was just an expression of friendliness and saying Hi to them. Here in Tennessee out in the rural areas you will still get a wave from a local person just saying Hi, no matter what you are driving. So, it doesn't sound like something originated by Corvette owners to acknowledge the coolness of another Vette driver.
I'm a gear head and have been one since I was a kid. I like cars, trucks, and motorcycles, even farm tractors. Somebody waves at me, I wave back and I don't care what they're driving. Got a wave from a guy on a Harley the other day and a guy in a Mustang GT while I was driving my Vette and you know what? I waved back!!
I love driving my Vette and I enjoy the handling and performance of these vehicles but I don't feel like I'm something special because I own one of them. Any idiot with a down payment and reasonable credit can buy a C4, especiall when considering how the prices have dropped lately.
I wave at all vettes and even other nice sports/muscle cars ...like camaro ss's, chevelles,..you get the point pretty much all old muscle cars I just love old camaros, gto's, chevelles....could go on and old I love cars in the 60 and early 70's
