They said they'd build it for $400K. I don't know how serious that was, or if they just didn't have any takers at that price. (Sounds too pricey to me, even for that much car.)
something to me doesn't quite add up. If you look at the 1/4 mile times and MPH - the car only hits 127MPH. In a stick car - that is not that great of a MPH and DEFINATELY not what a 800+ HP car would hit in the 1/4 through a manual box.
There could be other factors - but something doesn't sound right. And for 400K - you would go a WHOLE lot faster than that
You have to consider what top end it has to hit and the final drive needed to accomplish that. It's probably hitting a nice 10 second 1/4 with high gearing which would account for the lower trap speed. Also realize that at the end of the 1/4 the car has just begun to find its stride and has only hit 1/2 its terminal speed. Awesome!
Also, you're not paying for the perfomance as much as the exclusivity of the piece.
Some of you don't get it because you don't have deep enough pockets. It's "THE" Sledgehammer, one of a kind, unchallenged record holder, one of Callaway's best in fit and finish, the epitome of the C4's. "Hellooooooo... McFly"
Look at the value of the original Grand Sports or the Sting Ray Racer or the two 1969 ZL1's just to name a few.
The sledgehammer is so worth 400k if you have it. Think about the history let alone there is only 2 in existance. and it is a friggen callaway and broke records back in the late 80's that still cant be broken today. That car is a legendary machine built by a visionary that does amazing things with cars and if i had the disposible income i would definately drop the 400k on it in a heartbeat... just think it will only appreciate in value
Over 500 Callaway Twin Turbos were built for Chevrolet in the years from 1986 ('87 model year) to 1991, but only one "Sledgehammer" was ever built.
It was a special version of the production Callaway Twin Turbo, an engineering study for Callaway, used to investigate aerodynamic properties of the C4 and of the new Callaway AeroBody, as well as to advance its engine and support system technology. Of course, bragging rights and magazine exposure didn't hurt either.
Callaway engineers already knew how to build racing Corvettes, and later would build Corvette-based pole winners at 24 Hours of LeMans for example. But the Sledgehammer was a road car, not a purpose-built drag car, road racer, or other single-use vehicle. It had to do everything well.
Attaining 254+ mph was, and still is, a very significant achievement for any land vehicle. Accomplishing that speed in a car that was driven from its Connecticut birthplace to the track in Ohio and is now being driven on Colorado streets makes the Sledgehammer an icon in the Corvette world.
For over a decade and a half now the Sledghammer record has stood as an impressive markin the history books
However, as legendary as that car is, even years after the historic run, many rumors and mis-information is spread throughout the automotive world -
For the record, there was only one Sledge ever made - never duplicated, it is simply amazing!
Here is the real story, told to me firsthand, by those who were there and a part of the team who made this happen
You know, I didn't have any idea about this car when I saw it yesterday. If I'd known I was in the presence of history, I might have looked closer at this jewel.
gone in 60 seconds should have used the sleg hammer instead of that pos elinor rustang. now every one and there mother thinks thats the baddest car ever. if the slege hammer was in that movie it wouldnt have need nos to get to 120. lol. i hate mustangs. i just wish the stupid people of the world would relize what pos they are.

Well, if they were "so bad" as you say everyone thinks, how come they made a quite a few 67 Shelby GT500's...yet only ONESledgehammer.
price man price! not many ppl want to pay for a car that will do over 200mph cause they WONT USE IT! i think the GT500 looked pretty good for a ford but i agree i kind of think they should have used a different car but the origanal movie used a stang as well so it kind of makes since

Some of the kids around here have a lot to learn. Not growing up with the 60's muscle cars probably has a lot to do with it. A real car enthusiast can appreciate a nice machine regardless of the marque.
The 60's Shelby Mustangs earned their place in muscle car history and were and still are bad azz machines in looks and performance. You can't compare them to todays cars by just looking at the numbers. Those cars have a soul just like the Hemi Cryslers and Big Block Vettes and Camaros.
For those of you who still don't get it about the Sledgehammer, the car was a purpose built machine. It has nothing to do about you blowing it off in the 1/4 mile (which by the way if that was their goal they could use their resources to build a car that would eat you alive), it has nothing to do with what car was used in a movie, it's not about price though if you want something that exclusive it's going to cost. Callaway set out to accomplish something and their record still stands today. The car is an icon of the marque. Period.
For those of you who still don't get it, you never will and I feel sorry for that.

Is there anyone that remembers the original Sledgehammer front facia being put up for sale or auction a bunch of years back? I can't remember who, though one of the major Corvette parts companies MAD or Ecklers comes to mind unless it was Callaway themselves.

Yes, I remember - it was put up by Callaway cars through Mid America
