Getting discouraged
I had the car for a full month before stuff started going downhill, and now It seems like EVERYTHING is broken, mistuned, uncalibrated, malfunctioning....
I just replaced the tranny with one that is supposedly really really badass, but now it sounds like it grinds the gears around corners when I lay into it! the whole car shudders and growls and it makes me wince.
what the heck is that sound? it's started doing it in straight acceleration now, and in reverse, but only in first and reverse at sudden throttle application.

Things are always darkest before the dawn and the trials and tribulations, while a PITA, once solved result in a dream ride! You didn't give us much to go on!
Year, miles, type of tranny, what else is going wrong?
I agree with GREASE remark
I assume the tranny has fluid in it? What about the Diff?

I'm FAR, FAR from anything resembling rich, or even "well off" - I'm a broke-*** colelge student, but admittedly I do like to **** around with mechanical crap.
And god, do I love this car (once everything is buttoned up and it runs again). You'll love it even more, once you realize just how much work you've put into it, and that practically every bolt has been turned by YOU.
It still needs headlight bushings, tires, weatherstripping all around, paint on bumpers, shocks (all are blown), new seat covers, and like 10 other things, just to make it "decent" - and i can't wait to get to that stuff
It's liek a construction set when you're a kid. it's something to do I guess. Oh and yes, it's my daily driver now.

Hang in there!
Also kind of sounds like the limited slip differential being that it's loud in turns. Make sure your rear end is full of GM part # 105227 gear oil or a good SAE 80w-90 GL-90 gear oil.
I went over my vette and made a list of all the stuff that was wrong with it....and now I think I would sell it, if I didn't love it so stinkin' much!!
Yes, the tranny has fluid, and had not been acting strangely other than really weak shifts, and it was supposed to be a "performance" build.
The noise sounds like grinding gears and feels like ultra-fast wheelhop. It used to do it only when hitting the gas in a slow left turn, but then it started doing it in right turns, and now it does it even going straight.
I have not touched the rearend, and it performed fine last time I checked.
(just fix it.. it'll get better.. heck if people can rebuild cars from a junkyard there isnt anything you cant do especially if you put your mind to it!!! - Especially like resotring a vette).
One thing to keep in mind is vettes will always have value.. some people would give a nut just to own a c2 in ANY condition..
I would not recommend stripping a perfectly good C4.. the car is almost 15 yrs old.. you can expect it will need a few things.. and she'll love ya for it...
Heck, I've just about replaced everything in mine.. and its better than new at this point.. besides were all here to help you out if you get in a jamb.. there isnt anything on that car that can go wrong that someone here hasnt already fixed..

RACE ON!!!
I DID buy a new converter, a stock replacement from the local parts store.
The sound/shudder seems to be comming from furter back than my feet, but not the rearend.
I checked the c-frame bolts and they are all good
no u-joints are binding
I hope it's not all wore out, seeing as I just bought it in october! In any event, I'd still kill for one just like it with a 6-speed

Your description of a "shudder" sounds like a feeling one would experience from a slippage somewhere. The only other possible source of slippage is in the posi traction clutch pack. I can only imagine the problem being with the transmission. With that many R&Rs, I assume the TV cable is properly adjusted.
