Decided to go with the gm847 cam, Question
I found one for a good price and he said I will have to
just put the cam sprocket of the timing gears on the front of the cam and
knock the dowel in so its flush with the sprocket. Does that sound right lol. I hate to buy something that wont work for my car!~

That's going to be way more cam than you need in a 350. I've got it in my 396 running 11.0-1 compression and it's got a very choppy idle. Read over this before you decide. http://www.cranecams.com/?show=brows...41&lvl=2&prt=5

No way would I put this in a stock 350! I heard a CC306 running in an out-of-tune 383 and it was rough. Needless to say, the GM847 is a little "bigger" than the CC306.
Ramrod is right, you need bigger cubes and a good tune to make a 234/242 cam a "decent" driver.

I agree with cprgmr. I've been messing around with one of the dyno programs for the last 2 ours trying to get close for some more cam in my setup. Thats one that I plugged the numbers into my setup, to big! And I have a 383 with AFRs. When in doubt, go small. To big a cam will really screw up a car. Just my opinion!!

Tom, I haven't incountered any braking problems. Don't know how it would hold up under hard autocross style braking. When I get a chance, I'll see how much vacumn it pulls at idle.

For a good daily driver w/ stock heads, I wouldn't go any bigger than a HotCam or CC305 grind. A CC306 would still qualify as driveable, but you really need all the bolt-ons (headers, throttle body, custom tuning, etc.) for it to work at it's best.
Remember Kara, a bigger (cam)shaft isn't always the best performer

what heads do you plan on running? While I think you can get a 847 to make power in a 350 ci motor it is going to be on the edge of steetable. The 306 with a good set of heads and a full exhaust and a good tune can be streetable cam just not a whole lot of low end TQ so an stall is a must for an auto. I think the 306 is a great street cam for a 383 or 396 and with the bigger cubed it will make gobs of TQ with the right set up.
