Default AutoProm Emulation issues

I was trying to emulate last night and keep having problems with the engine shutting down (the SES light comes on as the engine dies, but if I give it gas, the engine will stay on if I can catch it in time). I have the USB AutoProm, a New Dell laptopm with Windows XP, and the car is a 1990 Corvette with the stock ecm. I have the horizontal switch in the right position an I need to get the car tuned ASAP b/c the emission cops are on my tail. P.S. I can get the TunerPro to connect to the autoprom, burn/read chips, and initialize emulation. The engine also runs fine with a chip in the ecm instead of the autoprom.

I finally got emulation to work!!

I had to wrap the ribbon cable in foil and then put a couple of twists into the cable. I am going to try the same with the longer cable that Craig gave me and see if that works too.

Craig, is it possible to make the emulation cable with something other than ribbon cable, like a shielded cable?

My theory is that maybe there is more electronical noise under hood where the Corvette ECM is than underdash where most other ECM's are. That maybe explains why I needed to shield the cable.

How old are your wires? Might be getting a lot of noise from the wires if they are old/damaged.

I was going to ask about that... how you had the thing hooked up because I remember trying to remote mount my chip in my '85 and I had issues with the ribbon cable being too long and even foil didn't help. I'm glad to hear you got it working because I'll be in the same boat soon with my '90 since I just ordered the same setup!

What dell laptop do you have? I got the 8600.

The wires have very few miles on them.

I have an Inspiron 1150. Windows XP (which means ECM852 is not compatible for datalogging)

I have used the shorter cable that comes with the autoProm USB package. It does not allow the autoprom to reach into the car, so I covered the autoprom in foil and placed it behind the battery. Craig told me that should be OK (I always have my fingers crossed). Using the Moates G1 memory adapter, the ribbon cable just fits in the ecm. then I run the USB cable from under hood to inside the car for the laptop.

I plan on trying the longer cable with foil and a few twists in it this weekend. I am kind of scared to leave the autoprom under hood. Maybe we can get Craig to make a case for the AutoProm that could undoubtfully weather the underhood conditions.
