In comparing a 95 A4 CPE to a 96 A4 CPE are there any technical, reliability or performance differences?
I understand that they both come with the upgraded (vacuum ) opti-spark system so I was just wondering if there is any advantage to buying a 96 over a 95 with the same miles on them.
The fact that it's a 95 would not exempt me here in WA.
How is it that OBDII makes it easier to pass an emmisions test?
All the do at the testing station is to plug into the cars diagnostic port. If there are no active DTC codes the car passes. Thats how a lot of these guys with LS1 engines squeak by emissions tests with big cams. They just use their tuning software and turn off the DTCs. There are no sniffer tests or treadmill tests as with the earlier OBD1 cars.

I had a 383 LT4 car pass here in AZ with a monster hydrolic 242/252 duration cam .56x/.56x lift with 110 LSA because of the OBDII test...that never would have passed if they ran a sniffer!

(no interest in CE )
Thanks for the education
So really, to answer your original question, I'd say that there is nothing of any significance that makes either any better than the other in the areas you mentioned. Good luck with your choice, either should make you a great car!

In San Diego, my '96 had to go on the rollers with a sniffer up its tailpipe.
Maybe the kids at the smog station didn't know what they were doing ...but I wouldn't think so; California takes it's emissions testing pretty seriously.
