Default replacing shift shaft seal

Sorry to beat a dead horse here but I couldn't find anything in search on this. The little seal that is on the shift shaft that goes in the side of the trans, does this seal fit flush with outside the case or is it sunken in a bit. I want to stop an oil leak there but it looks to me as if there is no seal in there now. I know for a fact that I have room for the new seal to go in as it is but if there's an old seal in there I want to get it out. Somebody responded to this a few months back with how they got the old seal out which is the hardest part of this job, anyone with any info please let me know. This is my project for tomorrow.

Tough to do in car. Last time I did it I had to lower trans a bit. Drop pan and disassemble sifter linkage and remove shaft. Then you can lever it out (seal)and reinstall using a 9/16 socket as a driver. It does recess in the hole and bottoms on a machined stop.

Thanks Pete, your way is probably much easier but someone did it without dropping the trans or the pan. No big deal, you answered my main concern as to where the seal sits in it's bore.

you csan do it w/o dropping the trans down, space is at a premium though. I have done it a couple of times. Be very carful not to damage the shaft, if you bugger it up it wont seal and leak over time. I know this for fact. To get the seal in I use a socket and a prybar to kind of press it in place.
