if you use Lunati PM rod for the 383. You will not need a new oil pan. But if you are going to use the H beam rod. You need a new oil pan to clear the rod and small base circle cam. I got a H beam on my 383LT1 and the factory oil pan are not clear, I end up using Morroso oil pan.

Don't think size think air flow
1) figure out what heads ya gonna run, edelbrock, GM LT4, AFR, ported LT1 (Intakes follows, but not a big deal)
2) Then pick your RPM range - this determines your Cam
3) Use displacement to adjust where your peak numbers are
(a 383 is only 9% off from a 350)

I think you'll find that 87% of your power gains will be from
1- quality craftmanship in parts and assembly
2- head flow
3 - head volume and cam selection (picking the smaller port and cam values possible for street performance)
4 - tuning
5 - displacement

What I'd do on the cheap
-have the nearest race machine shop fully port and prep heads for a .600 lift cam
-use the GM LT4 light wight valves for RPM or manley street flow valve
-get a set of light wieght rods (eagle) and pistons (manley) - Balance!
-cam it 224/224 for a .602 lift on a 114 for an auto, 110 for a stick
-use long tube headers
-get some gears
