Default resonator (remove or keep)

92lt1 - modded w/ ported heads and lt headers

Is it proven that removing the resonator will increase horsepower? I dont want resonance bad in the car- but i dont want to short myself any horsepower either?

It will definitely increase noise levels. As for increasing power, I seriously doubt it. If your exhaust is stock then it has a 2.75" system. The resonator is a full 2.75" ID as well and it consists of perforated pipe through the full length of the resonator. There is no internal X or H or other crossover pipe in the body of the resonator. If your mufflers are stock that is where the restriction is.

I talked with the B&B folks about the power gains of the X-pipe vs the Resonator. Using a LT4 as their mule on the dyno, they found very little difference in horsepower between their resonator and the X-pipe. BUT, there was a huge difference in loudness with the X-pipe.

So are we saying the resonator acts like an X-pipe? My car came with the resonator already removed; I love the sound.

Hey Strick, was the sound more or less with the x-pipe? Was the comparison between the two, or each to an exhaust system without either? I have loud resonance in my '85 with straight dual exhaust and just added an x-pipe. Haven't been able to try it yet because of the weather.

I kept my resonator, the car was to loud without it. BTW the resonator is staight pipe so I don't think it would create a restriction.

Let me explain the B&B test again. They ran a LT4 with OEM exhaust and their catback with a resonator and with a X-pipe. They were looking for horsepower differences between the resonator catback system and the X-pipe catback system. No, they didn't compare these to a straight pipe system. The X-pipe was much louder than the resonator by about 33%. The horsepower comparision showed little if any difference.
