Interior light delay module / relay FIX.. 85-87
how many C4's out there with that problem.. NO interior lights..failing to turn off or even liteup? 85- 87
Problem: part # 10098435 timer delay module failure: located behind bread box taped to main harness. about 2" square.
temporary fix should only be used as "it your car, you do want you want"
pins out of module: color codes may vary with years( check your manuals for exact color code for your year)
A= white wire goes to all lamps
B= black is ground, shorting white to Black will turn lights on
C= Pink/white is 12 volts from Ctsy/Clk fuse whic is hot all of the time
D= 2 whites wires come from the door switches. the switches close when the door is open and provides a ground on the white wire/wires depending on what door is open
E= is the reset signal used by the Delay module to turn the module off when you turn the ignition on. so the lights go off. you dont nee this wire.
You need a relay that can handle 5 amps @ 12 volts. single pole single throw normally open relay( common auto relay)Atlas NC502 or equiv.
what to do:
primary/coil of the relay needs 12 volts. Which is the pink/white.
the other side of the coil needs the 2 white wires from the door switches. When the door is opened, one of the white wires will provide a ground for the 12 volts through the coil. The coil will close the secondary contacts of the relay
The secondary contacts.
the thick white wire is from all of the bulbs
the black wire is the ground. becuase the realy is now closed. the white and black are now shorted together and provide the ground path for the lights so the lights will come on.
when you close the door, door switch opens the realy de-energizes and the black wire is no longer shorted to the white wire and the lights go out.
this arrangement will only turn light off and on as the door is open or closed. there will be no delay after door is closed.
this subject was discussed with other forum members when i had ask. it's good info for those that wish to use it...works for me

The "breadbox" is that big crash pad attached to the front of the dash panel in front of the passenger seat. Lots of people remove it and install a flat panel in it's place. The module is behind that area.

Hmmm- I wonder if my relay could have a problem. Mine works ok, ( lights come on, & go out after a short period after closing the door) but if I leave the hatch/doors open for around 20+mins while listening to the radio, & cleaning the car, the battery goes dead. This has even happened with a brand new battery.

My timer was removed by the previous owner. I installed the DLD-1 timer from http://www.webelectricproducts.com/ It took about half an hour to put it in and works great. It has a 20 second delay and fades out. It costs $40 and arrived in 2 days. I hope this helps.

Need for delay?
I agree with olman. Why do you really need a delay on the interior lights after you leave the car?

Courtesy light delay timer
I had the same problem. AC Delco part # 10098435 solved my problem. Looked a little different than stock, but works perfectly.
It may be a little hard to find. Apparently it's and obsolete part. It's taped on the wire harness in front of the ECM.
BTW - what's the deal with the factory using masking tape for that. Cheapskates - it's a corvette we're talking about here! Their flagship!
I'm not surprised. My '03 2500HD is turning out to be a rattletrap!

Here is a cheaper dome light dimmer module if you really want diming dome lights
http://www.centechwire.com/catalog/a...ries/il2.shtml
If you want something real fancy that will adde retained power to your car, also you can program this device to disable the retained power by which door that opens.

If all these 3 white wires and the relay are behind the breadbox, I might not be able to get it out since it looks like the original owner glued it on...

I just looked behind my breadbox and saw nothing but colored wires hooked to a passkey module box. There were no white wires or signs of the relay. Again, how big is the relay and what would it look like from an 89?

Melting Slicks
My Corvette guy is having a hard time finding the timer module for me. They have a NOS part, but its ridiculously expensive. I have read thru the posts and was wondering which of the described aftermarket dimmers worked best and if there were any problems after the installation.

I can’t find it!!
I have a 1984 and I just can’t seem to find the delay module. My car has no breadbox but I can’t get past the inner dash. Any suggestions would be well appreciated.
