I have a bad front pinion bearing and need some advice how to get the old one out
I have the drive shaft and yoke and seal removed but I don't can't get the bearing out. any ideas
If you only want to remove the front, cone and rollers, it should come out the front, where you're working. If you want to replace the front bearing, cup, and/or the pinion rear bearing the diff has to come out of the car and be disassembled.
Yes I only want to replace the front roller bearing. But I can't get it out of the housing. It seems to be too tight a fit to just slide out. I can't find a puller that will fit inside of the housing and grab the bearing
You won't be able to change the cup, as I said, but that is the way the cone and rollers go in. And that's where it comes out. It has a tight fit onto the pinion, but not a press fit. When the diff is coming a part on the bench, it usually takes a tap with a hammer and a drift to push the pinion out of the bearing. It sounds like there's a patch job going on, here.
Reread my last post. If you can get a good enough grip on the cone and rollers they should come out. But it is very unlikely, that you'll get the outer race (cup) out.

RACE ON!!!
just putting the bearing in W/O a new race is low percentage, you may be able to slide hammer the race out with a hook adapter, but once you start theres no turning back. There may not be enough room to get a good purchase on the race, shims etc. are back there......
I thought of that, too. But I don't know where you will find a two jawed puller that will have arms long enough to fit over the length of the installed pinion.
Thats the problem I am having. Finding a puller with long enough and thin enough arms.
I really don't want to tear the whole rear end apart if I don't have to.

I don't think its possible to remove the race from the housing. Even if you are able to remove the bearing from the pinion shaft.

I can't see how longer arms will help with the cone and rollers removal. There is nothing on the bearing to get a grip on. The only hope, *I* see, is to pull on the bearing, with a slide hammer, with a sheet metal tip that you can screw in between the rollers. Whether you succeed or fail, you've ruined the bearing. I will probably regret this, but why are you attempting this half-assed operation?
I am not attempting this anymore. I thought it would come out easy but since it didn't I have decided to rebuild the whole rearend.
I just want to make sure I don't buy some noisy gears. I have heard that richmond gears are noisy. I have found a complete rebuild kit with strane gears for a good price but I can't find anyone who has ever used strange gears
Nothing for you to regret. It was a good question in retrospect
A hundred tears ago, Bob Stange, the owner of Strange Engineering, was a friend of the GM of U. S. Gear. I would suspect Strange was selling U. S. Gears. Back then U. S. wasn't into Hi Po gears, but their gears were VERY good. I'd be surprised if they still weren't.
It sounds like you've made a wise decision in your change of methods.

Well it looks like thunder racing has the best package and it includes strange gears. Their salesman said the strange were a step up from motive or GM gears so unless the guy I talked with about a 12 bolt comes thru I willl bne ordering from Thunder Racing on Mon afternoon
