HI
changed out my water pump and refilled the system - the low coolant light will not go out - it appears that it is full naturally - is there a way to reset this light ?
Thanks
Where exactly is the detection module located? (My coolant light was coming on sporadically before my shunt, and I think it was an issue with the sensor.)
With the engine off, if you fill your cooling system to the neck of the filler, it will not be full and your low coolant light will come on when the engine gets to the opening temperature of the thermostat. C4's have the radiator higher than the engine block which traps air in the block. You need to, "burp", your cooling system. Here's how: starting from a cold engine, loosen the radiator cap to its stop point, start the engine and let it warm to the opening temperature of your thermostat. By pulling on the throttle cable, race the engine slightly and push in and turn to remove the radiator cap and observe that the coolant is flowing out of the upper hose due to the open thermostat. If there is air in your cooling system your coolant level will drop dramatically when your race the engine. While still holding the throttle open slightly, pour your antifreeze mix into the filler until it comes up to the neck of the filler and replace the radiator cap and then let the engine back down to idle. Sometimes you have to burp it more than once to get all the air out. REMEMBER, do not open the radiator cap if the engine is hot, always start cold so the coolant doesn't boil when the pressure is released and shoot out of the filler and scald you!!!!!
Great description of the process jfb. After having burped the system one time I was still getting the light, and, now I realize that this baby needs a few more burps. regards
If the above procedures don't work, then consider that the low coolant sensor located just below the rad fill cap on the engine side of the rad, may be gunked up or shot.
If it has been a long time since the coolant was changed and it lost its anti-oxidant properites, the sesnor surface can get oxidized and erroneously signal low coolant. If that is the case it neds to be replaced.
