Default a bad lifter...

would show up as what? Ticking when warm, cold, both? idle or under load or both?

I have a slight ticking on the driver's side at idle (tough to hear anything over the exhaust when I rev it...) but can't say that I notice any bogging or symptoms outside of a somewhat high idle (meaning it won't idle well under 900RPMS or so). BUT, that could be tuning and not engine... Also, can damage occur from a collapsed lifter during normal driving or is it just poor fuel mileage and less performance?

So any hints or tips before I pull of the valve covers this weekend? I'll focus on feeling around the springs and checking pushrods, as well as the exhaust manifold- but with my luck it's something that will require me to pull the SuperRam intake AGAIN. lol...

I've also noticed that the Superram intake seems to magnify the injector pulsing to a noticably loud noise, but I feel that the "ticking" in question is more focal to the driver's side....

One last question: Can I replace a lifter with no major issues regarding break-in? I don't have to worry about the cam lobe crapping out do I?

A lifter will be more likely to make noise after the engine is warmed up and the oil is thinner. Likewise at idle when the oil pressure is lower.

The idle speed wouldn't be affected. A collapsed lifter allows valve train clearance where it wouldn't otherwise exist. Short term, it shouldn't cause any damage.

Most often, a new flat tappet on a used cam will survive. *I* would do the 20 minute at 2000 rpm break in routine. There is no concern at all with a roller. A year model would have been nice.

it's an ex-CFI (`84).

Well thanks for the description though- sounds like my issue to a "T." I'll try to listen to the motor and narrow down a cylinder then...

Generally speaking, the inner spring is what binds or breaks causing failure? I've got some compcams hyd tappet lifters in now (~15K miles) and might just rebuild the entire set of lifters when I pull the intake (assuming I find nothing else to steer me away from the lifters).

I was considering a swap to a retro-fit roller setup since I'll have it half apart anyway... but that's probably going to be a pretty penny and a whole lot of busted knuckles to do while the engine is in the car.

Very often, it's dirt or sludge plugging up an oil passage in or near the lifter. That may not apply to you, especially if the engine is as fresh as the lifters.

Make sure it's not just an adjustment problem, your rocker nut may have backed off a bit.

I had a ticking on the driver side when I bought the car I thought it was the lifters but found out one of the sparkplugs were loose I tighten it and no more ticking
