I personally like the L98 because the entire engine is the same as the old carbureted 350's, but change the intake manifold out. The stock manifold has a 17" intake length making it more of a tow truck engine than a performance motor. I use the Mini-Ram (decreases that to 4"), but the Accel SuperRam is also a popular choice. Happy 'vetteing

done on basically stock l-98's. converting to an lt1 will mean a whole lot of wiring issues. i'm converting my 90 to an lt1, but i'm also doing a ground up with a shinoda kit. it'll be different than anything out there, i hope

Putting a LTx engine into your 88 would be both time and cost consuming. One reason is because you would have to install either a DFI aftermarket EFI system or wire in a LTx engine controller and harness. You can easily build a L98 that would run well into the 12s or more with what it would cost to do a LTx engine and the associated wiring nightmare. You mention street manners for a daily driver. Build a L98 with a 219 cam, ported heads, LT headers and a Super Ram manifold and you will have the cake and eat it as well. And it won't cost you an arm and a leg. The most expensive parts of the build up is the heads and the intake manifold. If you choose to go with the intake I can help you with that and the cam.

Where did you get the Shinoda kit?
I saw one once that was gone before I could get the money together. I would love to swap out the rear portion of my car..... I'm not sure the Shinoda front is for me, but I would love to be able to find a kit.

And as for the original question:
Count one more vote for the 'build up your L98' option. I'd bet you could get a car pretty deep into the 11's for the price of a LT1 swap. If you're looking for 12's, it's no contest.

Low 12s, high 11s are easily attainable on this setup. I'm currently building TJ's exact suggestion right now. 219, heads, LT headers, exhaust... I went with some other goodies, a MSD small cap distributor and coil, Comp Cam 1.6 RRs, and Melling lifters.

Keep TJ in mind when you're building, too. I bought my 219 from him. Good guy to do business with.

Have fun with it.

I have done the LT1 conversion on my 84 and it is a lot of work. If you are only looking for mid 12's to high 11's then stick with the L98 you will get a lot more bang for the buck and the cars wiring can remain stock. Your plan of sticking the L98 in your wifes 84 is another PITA project. Any time you change the EFI set up you are going to have big changes to the wiring harness and ECM. While I think the LT1 swap is a nice conversion it would be a whole lot easier and cheaper to get a nice set of heads, cam and a SR intake for less $$ then the LT1.

The LT1 intake is a great intake but it has to be heavily modified to fit the L98 heads. The Mini Ram will give similar results to the LT intake and is made for the L98 but it is considerably more expensive. Good luck with what ever direction you go but keep in mind that the SR and MR/LT intakes make power in different ways so make your decision before you select you head/cam package to take full advantage of what ever intake you go with.

i have researched this intake stuff for a solid year, and there is no way around the Superram. It bolts on, It makes power, and it is Emmissions friendly.

Superrams are seemingly the way to go . If you HAVE to have an LT1 intake, I have one that's been collecting dust for awhile now...
