it is a complete PITA to remove, but try to squirt some wd40 around the base and let it soak for a moment. Then try to grab it with a pair of needle nose pliers and pull like a ****. Also, don't be afraid to use a flat head screw driver to pry on it, but be careful when you do that.

The best way to get it out is to grab the key with a good set of vice grips and tap it out with a small hammer. I had a small C-clamp that I put on the vicegrips so I could tap on something.

if it is a 6-speed, the best way to get that off is to fabricate a thin, flat piece of metal and put a 90 degree bend a 1/4 inch away from the end. Then it will grab on the lip of the metal peg and it will come out really easy.

I removed the roof, got some good standard pliers, and stood on the seats and pullled as hard as I could.

If you have anything that can get under the lip of the metal wedge without messing up the leather ****, it helps.

And when you put it back in, just tap it in lightly, save you or someone else the same hassle later on.

Gee... the automatic is SO easy...

Use a small screw driver and pop off the push button... under that is a snap ring. Remove with the same screwdriver. the **** comes right off.

This is how it works on bastet44's '87. Took 5 minutes.

You don't have to make this tool. Go to an autoparts shop and buy a brake tool adjuster. It's the one that turns the self-adjusting cog on drum brakes and it looks like a mini-prybar. It works great on the 6-spd wedge pin.
