I hope you don't mind me copying and pasting your progress, I'm very interested in building a 396 in about a years time or so and have never built one before. I've got a good idea, but these pics are great...

Woops ... there is miscalculation here on the previous answer provided. You can use it with some modifications... If your interested - read on from one who has done it. First you have to grind down the bolt at 10:00 on the timing cover to make the waterpump fit. I also ground some 0n the waterpump there. Second you have to angle drill the center two intake to head bolt holes. This is because of a different angle between the ZZ4 heads and the L98 heads in these 4 bolt hole locations. The intake is alum and drills easily. Get a drill the same size as the original hole an wallow the hole in the direction of where the rocker arms should be in the head. Alternatively buy an ACCEL intake and no drilling is required. You need to reuse your stock distributor - so make sure the gear on the bottom is a bronze one to match the Cam gear and is in good shape if your do not replace it.
