Default Oil Pump drive/Dist Gear...

Someone posted about this a little while ago and I couldnt find the post to reply. Anyways, I just had mine replaced and found out that there is a replacement aftermarket gear that is alot stronger. Its made by Crane and it a bronze gear. The Part # 11988-1 is what you should ask for. Just a little FYI.

That bronze gear isn't stronger. Ir's softer, so it will wear out instead of the gear that is integral with your billet roller cam. They wear rather quickly against any camshaft. It is a sacrificial lamb. Check with the manufacturer of your SPECIFIC cam to determine the best distributor gear for YOUR cam. Some cam grinders offer similar grinds on different cam cores that require different dist gears. I've seen steel roller cams with press on cast drive gears that work best with a stock, non roller gear. It isn't about strength, it's about compatibility.

RACE ON!!!

Hey ! You also have to be careful with your oil pump and choice of oil . a high pressure pump and also 50wt oil will cause premature failure ! the bronze gear is the weak link between the distributor , cam , and oil pump !

Crane is supose to be making a steel gear or a coated steel gear that is compatible with the induction hardended or billet steel cam gears. They told me that they are indeed making them in a .427" ID gear to fit the LTx drive gear. But I can't find a part number for them so its best that you call Crane direct and ask for a part number. The LTx drive gear is also the same ID as a standard small diameter GM HEI distributor shaft. Most aftermarket distributor shafts are either .491 or .500 OD.
