Default timing chain?

Hey guys, I am in the middle of a cam install on my 96 lt1 as some of you know. I am wondering what timing chain a lot of you are running. I am not wanting to go with a electric water pump so keep that in mind. I am wondering if replacing it with a stock one would be ok or if I Have to go to a tougher one. I am already getting the blues from the wife about how much I have spent on the car since I bought it. If replacing with a stock one is fine than that is what I will do. If I have to go bigger than I can go to war with the wife if need be. Thanks in advance for your feed back

I think that is funny because my story is the same. You will pay as much for a stock chain as you will pay for a new HD chain and gear set up (almost). I did the same thing and ended up replacing the entire thing. How many miles are on the stock one?

A GM timing set is around $100, that is what I would install

I read an article that said you should DEFINITELY change from the stock timing chain set. If I remember correctly the article said the stock setup won't live when you up the power level of the engine.

I didn't pay a whole lot of attention to the article, since it didn't apply to my application, but the durability issue sticks out in my mind.

This may help placate your wife, too.

Hope this helps.

LOL, Yea, my EX-wife use to get all bent out of shape when I started looking through the car catalogs, yet she had over 200 pairs of shoes!!!

All in nice little shoe boxes, stacked up head high in the master closet.

Being single again took care of that little problem.

Default Timing chain?

The stock "LT4" timing gear setup will handle what you want . The "extreme duty" timing gear setup will work also, but it is overkill for what you want.

How often should you change the timing chain? I have 78k on my stock LT-4.

I don't have the exact specs in front of me but you are getting close. It is not worth the risk of what it could do if it broke. I would also consider the driving that you do also. ie, are you on it a lot and what did the previous owner do and what mods do you have that could be putting a strain on it?

I can't remember off the top of my head if it was Westech or some other big name shop that builds a lot of SB engines.

I do remember that they found a lot of failures with the stock setup. I believe part of the cure was using a solid cam gear; heavy but lives.

I'll try to find the article and post which mag and issue it's in.

Thanks, that would be great information to have for all of us. By the way I have used a lot of that information you sent me a few months ago on cams. Thank you for all you do for the forum.
