On my '88 there are two rubber prongs on the back of the mirror frame that press through holes in the masonite center board to hold the mirror in place. Of course each prong has a step that holds against the back of the masonite board.
Since I had the fabric off for a total referb, it was easy to access these prongs and work then out to release the mirror.
If you don't have the fabric off so you can unfold the cardboard to expose the tips of the prongs I don't know how you would get to them. I would not try to pry the mirror off without releasing the retaining prongs first.
Perhaps you can just slip a piece of plastic behind the mirror and out to the ear tip. Use two narrow pieces, one on either side of the mirror retainer prongs.
Ruby, I have some fix kits for this very problem and intructions as well. You don't have to take the mirror clear out, just loosen at one end and slip the plastic in and snap it back shut. Let me know if you want one of the fix kits. I'll ship it out to you as soon as you PM me your address.
