Default 87 corvette temp gauge problem

I have recently noticed that the temp gauge goes all the way up sometimes. The car is not over heating , just the gauge acts stupid.
I was thinking maybe the sensor is bad where is that located on my car.
thanks for any help

I believe your right about the wire maybe shorting out....anyone know how that wire is run from the sensor on the passenger side head?
I tried looking ....i think i have to put the car on a lift?

If the gauge max's out, chances are it is a bad wire, with an intermittent problem. You can trace the wire and/or the connection from the sending unit, located in the right side cylinder head between the #6 and #8 spark plugs.

RACE ON!!!

Sender is between #6 & #8, right head. Ground the wire and the gage should read 300; disconnected 0 or LO. Check the wire for an intermittent short to ground - either on the head, rear of the engine maybe.
