Default Roller Block?

What is the diffrence between a flat tappet and a roller block? Is it just the cam bearings and the lifters? All the motors I have worked on in the past were not rollers...

A roller block is machined to accept "spiders" (one on either side of the valley) that have "fingers" which ride atop and on either side of each roller lifter to revent rotation of the lifer as it moves up/down. Such rotation with a flat tappet cam is necessary for long lifter life but rotation of a roller lifter is disasterous.

Of course the cam, lifters and push rod lengths differ between the two also, but are not technically "the block".

I've not heard/read anything about cam bearing differences.

Thanks for the reply. Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to it.

I assume that the "Spiders" and "fingers" should be seen when the intake is removed from the motor? This is the vally of a block that I was thinking about rebuilding for the 89.

If my assumptions are correct then this is a Flat Tappet motor with hyd. lifters.

[EDIT]

Ok, so after looking at the service manual it looks like the Valve Lifter Restrictor Retainer and the Valve Lifter Restrictors are something that can be added to this 350 by getting a new pair when I order the new lifters. (I want the motor built before I start to take my existing motor out.)

YEP.
Check with a machinest, they may be able to hone the lifter bore and set the motor up for a roller.
The lifter galley may be a little weak though.

On a roller block, the 3 holes down the center of the valley are tapped for bolt to hold the spider down.
The cam has a retainer plate held by 2 bolts (visible behind the cam sprocket ) and the cam has a machined lip that the retainer seats into.

That looks like a roller block to me. The bolt holes in the center of the block directly above the cam is for the lifter retainer spider. Also look at that top of the lifter bores, the pads are machined flat for the lifter locator bars. All you need is the spider, retainer bolts and 8 lifter locator bars.

A roller block will also uses a cam retainer. You'll see two bolt holes on the block, one on either side of the cam, behind the cam timing sprocket.

Well, we have not taken the timing chain cover off the motor yet. I will have to wait a couple weeks for that. The motor is up at my dads place in Oklahoma. He has a big shop that I am rebuilding the motor in.
