Default Steering column play?

Need some help....

Have a 93 Coupe......Tilt Column has some play in it. Typical when used as a LEVERAGE DEVICE for personal extraction from vehicle.

How can I repair this?

I have the same problem (I think)...when in driving position, if I push the left bottom corner (say the 7 o'clock position) my steering wheel moves about 1/2". I have been told, pull the steering wheel and some of the guts inside the column and tighten some bolts down inside. The guy who told me this did the body work on my 1970 Monte I am restoring. He said it is about 3 to 4 hours. If you find this advice to be true, please let me know.

I received the same response for the shop that did work on my car. When asked, they replied that is was not a safty issue.

Yeah mine does it too.

I never want to fool with it due to the airbag.

Do some searching, there's threads all over about this and also a tech tip.

There is a spring service kit that includes 5 or 6 little parts for the steering columns also. It's about $20.

I'm going to be doing this on mine soon, I'll try and take pictures and get a step-by-step together.

I had searched a little...but with no luck. Will try again. I will also take pics when I did into mine. THIS HAS GOT TO BE FIXED before any track time. MAN......just pulling into a sweeping left hand curve near the house was VERY Scary!

I'll keep posting with progress!

bogus wrote a nice tech tip (HERE) that covers the basics pretty well. If you do not have a factory service manual (Helm not Haynes) then you better get one because there are a lot of little parts that all have to back in a certain order or things won't work right - plus the pictures and diagrams help visualize what is going on.

That said, I just did mine about two weeks ago and it was relatively simple. Getting the column out of the car was the worst part - lots of wires down there. Pulling the airbag is no big deal - 2 screws and one wire - just don't go probing around with a powered test light or multimeter all is well. I got the tilt column rebuild kit from Superior Chev (CF discount rocks) for $20. The two little pivot pin replacements did the trick - column is nice and firm now. My horns also work better after I put everything together.

If you have problems, ask the forum. Many have done this and can offer help if needed.

99% of the time it's the base bolts in the column that are loose...It's quite a PITA if you've never done one and requires a pivot pin puller and the correct size torx socket in addition to a lockplate tool...It DOES become a safety issue if it gets worse..

You may or may not need a pivot pin puller. On my column, the pins were so worn that they practically fell out. I bought a puller but only used the threaded part to yank them out. The new ones went in real tight like they should.

The rest of the special tools (wheel puller and lock plate compressor) are available for rent at Autozone and Oreilly's. They are also pretty cheap if you cannot find a rental.

Hey Dale, I am new at this but does Superior Chev give a discount to CF members? I would like to buy that steering column service kit. Do I need to call them and tell them I am a member?

Took my '87 in to a Chevy dealer for "loose bolts". Estimated $275 to $375. Bad luck.... cracked aluminum part. Part no longer made so we found a salvaged steering column and completed job for $1000.
