Help with troubleshooting....
It doesn't start making the noise until the engine heats up. Always pretty quiet at first but progressively louder and more frequent as the heat builds.
Took it to a mechanic and he said he "had no idea" but then he listened a little bit longer and told me that it sounded like it was coming from toward the front of the engine and that he suspected a pump was going bad. Water, oil, air, etc....
This set me to thinking..... a centrifugal pump (as I would imagine) should make a REGULAR sound whereas a positive displacement pump might make an IRREGULAR sound.
Do these symptoms spark anyone's memory? Any leads?
(86 TPI with aluminum heads, no modifications done to car.)
Look for any pulley that wobbles if you can't isolate the sound and check the tensioner for proper setup.
Does it make the noise with A/C compressor on vs off?

Here is a list of things that I found make noise.
Injectors
air pump
a/c pump
pullys & belts
even the air cleaner sucking air
I put it this way because I was tracking some noises also and found all this make noise.
Bad noises grind, sqeak, rattle, and thump. any other noise is just it working

@ 65z01 - I'm definately gonna try that tomorrow. Doubt it's the AC cause I haven't had air conditioning since I got the car
