I have an 86 coupe with 4+3 transmission, K&N air filter with open faceplate on it, otherwisw pretty stock. OD works fine. On Interstate trips I get 22-23 mpg by calculation (the digital dash agrees very closely with those mpg results, but I would like to get better mpg on the open road.
The Hyperchip Street Runner sounds/looks like a nice insert for me, but the hp chart on the Hyperchip website doesn't look like it makes much difference below 3500 rpms. I am turning 2000 rpms at 72 mph on the Interstate, and I'm rarely above 3500 rpms, so I wonder:
Would the Street Runner chip make any difference for me in mpg or general driving?
I did a search for Hyperchip, and only hit 4 results. In one reply I read a comment about 22-23 mpg might mean an O2 sensor is faulty. Does anybody have experence with this?
Thanks for the feedback.
When I was running higher fuel pressure with my AFPR, an agressive TPS setup, base timing bumped to 8deg BTDC and a 160deg T-stat & fan switch, I tried a Hyper Tech chip and saw absolutely no difference at the strip nor on the highway.
I don't think that chip will add anything to performance nor to gas mileage.
Have you checked mileage averaged over a few miles of flat highway with cruize set?? These are the conditions under which I feel that I can get reliable readings for comparison with each mod I make.
you should be getting closer to 28+ mpg on the highway.it may be time for a full tuneup if that has not ben done in a long time, also dont forget to change the fuel filter and i would be suspecious about the 02 sensor, they are not that expensive to replace on your year.
First thing to do is give it a full tune-up, plugs/wires/cap/rotor, then O2 sensor, and then you may need to replace injectors because if one is leaking it'll kill your mileage.
