Default air con

Went for a ride today, blistering hot outside, damn air con (Electronic climate version) not cold. (89 by the way if it matters).

On lifting the hood, I see the compressor clutch is engaging for a second disengaging for a second, engage, disengage, ..... and so on.

Does this mean the system needspumping up with more refrigerant or what? I have cleaned up all the connectors that look relevant.

Does this mean anything to anybody, could do with a fix here, we are taking the car to Portugal next week, and it can get pretty warm there

Usually when the freon is low it will cause the compressor to cycle.

But does the 89 C68 system provide a way to see error codes like the 90-96 system?? This link http://www.idavette.net/tech/c4diag.htm show you how to pull C68 codes if something is not right.

If there is a system fault, there should be an indicator light flashing.

I think you are correct. From what I can gather, either the pressure switch is faulty - i.e. pressure good but switch telling ECM lies, or the pressure is low. Problem is, don't think I can test the switch without depressurising system. So - I need to find someone to pump it up. I hate it when I can't do the job myself - I trust no-one with my Corvette apart from me and you. (and I'm not too sure about you)

Thanks for taking the time to reply friends, appreciated!

(PS - tried it - no fault codes 89, bummer)

The compressor will do this when low on gas. Buy a kit with what your system is using, probably not r-34, should't take more than a couple of cans. This is a cheap and easy fix.

Either the compressor is low on refrigerant or high pressure switch is faulty. At least, that's where I'd look first.

Good suggestion, problem is the gas in there now is that stuff that has been banned (R12? I forget) - however I am taking it to a re-gassing place tonight where they will replace it with something environmentally friendly.

"This is a cheap and easy fix" ..... not the way my life works my friend.

No trouble codes for low gas on the '89. Low Pressure Switch tells the Dash Assembly to kill the a/c clutch ground signal when the pressure falls to 25 psi. That keeps the system from icing up. However, when it's low on gas, very little liquid refrigerant enters the evaporator and what gets in boils off immediately leaving nothing to absorb any heat. The pressure that reaches the low pressure switch is less than 25 psi and that cuts power to the clutch. With the a/c off, pressure rises back to 50 psi and the contacts in the low pressure switch close which gets it going again, albeit somewhat briefly, so the cycle repeats itself. Assuming the low pressure switch is working right, it probably needs gas and if it does, the a/c shop you took it to should try to find out why it leaked out and fix that too.

Ok, took it to the shop, and purged the r12, replaced with r134. Froze my nuts off on the way home. Just goes to show all of the above posters aren't entirely stupid.

(sort of compliment where I come from - thanks guys)

John,
Just out of curiosity, who did your service and what did they charge? Are you going to the CCCUK Nationals this weekend?

Ray , sorry got back to this late, been away.

The firm that did it (can't remember the name but got the phone No. if you need it) had an American guy on there staff - "Hey I just love these motors" - and are based in Leeds, opposite Leeds United Elland Road ground. They flushed the system of the R12, replaced with R134a, £65 cash.

Apparently they had been to the Nationals themselves on Sunday - busy all day.

Hope you are enjoying the Corvette weather - It don't rain all of the time in Blighty!

John

John,
Thanks for getting back. £65 sounds like a bargan! I just did mine myself and was curious what places were charging. I'm leaving for the Nationals tomorrow. Forcast looks dire, but I have been enjoying the weather the last few days. I've been living in Yorkshire for 15 years, so I know when to make hay!
