Default rear end noise

I have a '96 LT1 auto with 61k miles . I hear a noise in the rear end which happens occasionaly. If I shut car offand put it in Park and rock it back and forth I hear it. Where should I begin to look, universals, bearings etc..

I am assuming the noise is a pop or crack. Start by looking for red rust around your u joints. If you can, go to a local oil change shop with a pit and ask if you can park the car over the pit and go under the car. There you can inspect the ujoints pretty easily and also "rock" the car to and fro to see if you can pinpoint the origin of the sound. If you can find nothing, pull the rear wheel and hub assy and grease the spindle, many guys have posted the rusted spindle pops alot. If still nothing, pray you don't have to go into the diff.
