I have a 1996 LT4 with LT headers, no cats, all stainless steel with flowmasters. I need to revise the exhaust to comply with NY state's new OBDII inspection process, which means putting cats back on.
I have talked to 2 exhaust shops that are recommending scrapping my entire system and returning it to stock.
Has anyone modified a setup like mine that has passed OBDII inspection? All four O2 sensors are there. Do the sensors need to be located a specific distance back from the engine to work properly?
Suggestions?
I could install O2 sims but it wouldn't pass a visual.
O2 sims will stop it from coding but, I understand that NY and CA are tough with their inspections. I have a similar exhaust setup and O2 sims on my LT4. In AZ all they do is hook up to Mr. PCM and look at the OBDII here. They do have an inspection mirror that is supposed to look under the car, luckily mine is too low for it to work. Just make the cats easy to remove and replace. Or you can just bend sheet metal to look like cats that clamps on to show the inspector.

I have the Exotic Muscle long tubes but not installed yet. My understanding is that you can install the O2's and cats and it will perform as stock (all O2's working, cats effective).
If the visual just looks for cats, and the inspection is just a dyno, you will be ok.
If, however, they inspect for the cats at the stock location--you're screwed. I very much doubt this though--they'd have to know the location on a lot of makes& models.

Install some good high-flow cats, and you'll pass with flying colors. The exhaust shops you spoke with see a Corvette, and they smell money. They want you to scrap your system so that *they* can rebuild it for you. Besides, they're required by law (most likely) to discourage you from altering emmissions equipment on your vehicle. If you want reliable information about getting your car to pass emmissions, you have two places to go:
1) the people who drive modded cars and have passed (i.e., CorvetteForum or your local Vette club), or
2) the shops that build the modded cars.
Anything's possible - you just have to find the right shop. FWIW, there are plenty of people with C3s, C4s, and C5s (and soon, C6s as well) running in CA with LTs and *no* cats, let alone LTs and cats. If we can pass, you can.
