I would find a starter/alternator rebuild shop in your area and have them rebuild yours. It’ll probably be better than any starter you’ll find at the discount shops.
On a side note, how strict is the safety inspection in UT. I’m thinking about moving there and im not looking forward to the safety/emissions BS.
A big help once you put the new started in is to buy a DEI heat wrap for it. Your local A&A, Autozone, etc. should carry it. Without protection, headers will burn up a starter.
I ahve an L98 with longtube headers and I starting to experience heat soak problems with my starter.
Is there a later model, smaller starter out there will work for me? Or do I have to get a mini starter from an aftermarket vendor?
Are your headers coated jet hot inside and outside? My headers run VERY cool, and would not be worried about frying starter. My factory starter went bad, so I just bought a Summit mini starter and also bought the wrap for the starter just to be safe. I bought the starter to fit my flexplate and all. However the mounting block for it did not quite clear the oil pan's rear right corner. I had to grind it down a bit to get it to fit, but it works great. I hope that helps a little.
