Default Engine Cleaning

Hi i have a 95 vette stock with a dirty engine. I want to clean it up so i wanted some tips, never done before. What should i use and is it ok to spray it down with a hose. What should i beware of and should i do it while the engine is cold or warm. Thanks

Most will advise never to spray down engine with water. The opti spark is located on the front of the engine and should not get wet.
Do a search on opti spark and you will find many threads about this.Optis are really expensive....Most clean engine with rags and one area at a time....

I would do it the hard way with a rag full of de-greaser. I would keep away from putting cold water on a hot engine- thermal stress can crack very strong metal. And with the Opti-spark, even the improved vented model on the 95-96's, I would never wash it. It you do - use aluminum foil around electrical connectors of which there are many to keep them dry.I would put a towel over the Opti and alum. foil over the towel.I would always want a dirty engine that ran than a clean engine that didn't..
