Default Starter maybe

Intermitently, normally on a hot day, After I have been driving for any distance, I shut the car off and when I try to start the car again, turn the key dash lights up but when you try to turn the starter over nothing happens. I was told the starters burn out so I put a new starter in 10 months later the same thing started happening again. During the 10 month period I drove to car about 20 times. This is a 1988 convertable with 16,000 original miles, what's wrong?

How does the voltage read on the dash, just after startup and then the constant value. If it jumps to close to 14Vdc after startup and settles to mid 13s your battery and alt would be ok.

When you try to start do you get a "click"ing or no sound?
Do the lights dim?

I don't know if the lights dim, I installed a new Alternator and battery though, don't believe low voltage is a problem because it will usually start within the hour when it cools down.

Get yourself a pipe or something you can tap the starter with next time this happens-if it starts then you've found the culprit-worked for me, But that's a fairly new starter you've got, where did you get it? there's some pretty bad rebuilts out there. You might also take a good look at
the power and ground cables, sometimes they corrode back under the insulation and cause problems.

If the above does not work and your vett has an aftermarket alarm system, it could be getting in the way of key resitance code reading corectly in the computer. Also, your vats maybe giving you problems. Or there may be a starter circut wire with an inappropiate ground.

Another option is put a heat blanket around you starter and also add a heat shield. I put in both and stopped the overheating starter.

I also pulled the aftermarket alarm out and since that time the starter has always worked.

Good luck.

Does your passenger side valve cover leak?
If so, is your starter gunked up with oil sludge?
