Extend the wire and put it on the other side. It ain't gonna make any difference to the gauge.

Have you checked the coolant lines (and holes) that run from head to head?

How'd you manage that I figured that you put the heads on the wrong side of the motor, and that's why the ECT sensor was plugged/unplugged on the wrong side. That would put the rear coolant openings in the front.
