What is an acceptable knock count during a test drive of 20 minutes. I know less is better, but is zero attainable with a good tune?
Thanks in advance.
I'v read some of your other posts and you seem very knowledgeable on the subject of tuning. I'm using TTS Datamaster for datalogging on my 91 ZR-1. The timing always reflects a 6 degrees deficit from the advance tables. The car runs much better if I put in 6 degrees across the board but I pick up a knock here and there, but not bad..just single knocks at low rpm under load and a single knock during higher rpm under acceleration. The car just feels better with the timing pushed by 6 degrees.
What is your take on this?
Thanks

The ZR1s that I have worked on typically will require a maximum of 30 degrees of timing at WOT. From what I have found there isn't any more power to be made by adding any more timining lead. This was confirmed time and time again on my chassis dyno. They typically like a AFR of between 12.5 and 13:1. Some cars seem to respond better to 13:1 while others will knock at that AFR and prefer 12.5:1.
If you are seeing knock counts but not any actual knock retard, I wouldn't worry about it. If you have headers, that seems to have some affect on KR in they way it makes the engine more susceptable to KR. I have not personally seen this, but it was mentioned by a ZR1 tuner far more experienced than myself.
If you are only getting a knock here and there and the ECM isn't pulling timing then you are probably ok. The thing to do next is to log during some 1/4 mile runs while making small timng adjustments and see how it affects your times. Once you find the "perfect" advance there, make sure it hasn't affected your part throttle knock counts.
