Default Want More Horsepower

Hello,

I recently purchased an 1989 Coupe and want to beef up the horsepower. What can I do to gain more horsepower without breaking the bank? Thanks for any helpful feedback.

What do you consider "breaking the bank?" That will really define what you can get. I know that if you have an auto, a stall converter would be good, gears (3.73 or 4.10), or you can start with the standard intake, exhaust and performance chip. It all depends on the money. The cheapest of those mods is around 250. For me, the best bang for my buck was my 4.10 gears and my long tube headers! I'm sure more people will chime in. The mods are endless...

Welcome to the forum, this place is a wealth of information.

I started a similar thread last week and got some great responses. Heres a link if you'd like to check it out.

Welcome to the forum. Gears are the best bang for the buck. A decent cat back exhaust system is also good and makes for a good sounding car. Even though it may not get you the most power it will sound nice. I had one customer purchase a Borla catback just so that his car would sound like a Vette should

There are many proven packages out there for the L98 coupe that you have. Depending on how much power you want there is a combination that will give that to you. The basic bolts on would be a catback exhaust system, large tube runners, headers, modify the TB to 52mm, cut back the spark plugs (feebie), bypass the throttle body coolant system (another feebie), re-chip the ecm.

More advance performance mods would be a LPE/Accel 211 or 219 depending on your power needs, a LPE/Accel Super Ram intake manifold. The cam and manifold package is one of those known working packages that are in several forum members sub 12 and 11 second daily driver corvettes. You could easily have a 12 second car with this combination. Unfortunately it is one of the more expensive items to buy and install as well. CNC ported heads is also another more advance and expensive modification.

Just ask around there are many that have done these typical mods their cars.
