Default Help!!

Hi again folks, this place is great!
Now, could I get someones expert opinion?
I recently posted about an issue with the digital dash in my 49,000 original mile 87. The left side of the read out had started flickering about a week ago, then it went dim; not out, but not as brite as the rest of the display. A couple of days ago, I noticed that the right directional works sometimes and other times, it stay on... no blinking.
Yesterday morning, the left directional started blinking slowly.
Driving to work last night, I noticed the volts display was reading 10, where it normally is around 14 or 15. I also noted that, while it was foggy, everything seemed darker than usual. Then I noticed the stereo sounded HORRIBLE... I thought I had blown a speaker. Then, the volts began to go south...
... so, I turned around (about 30MPH thru the parking lot of a big strip mall. I thought I was gonna end up walking home. Again, I really do NOT know anything about what makes motors run... not a clue about working on them. With that out in the open, am I correct in assuming it's the alternator? And if so, how much $$ to fix it>
Thanks again
Bob

Alternator or battery. You can have both tested (free) at a local auto parts store. The alternator is about $100 (or there abouts) to buy from a parts store and can be changed an just a couple of hours. A dealership will probably sock you for about $250+ to do the job, including parts.

Default Thank you so much!

Hi "Morley",
Thank you for taking the time to post that.
I just went out and turned the key... 13v... after I started "her", staying right around 12v.
I'll get it checked today.
Thank you again and have a great day!

I agree! Both are a simple change (battery or alternator) and not to expensive.

No output on alt. Your running off battery power now. Check alt connections and battery connections for cleanliness and tightness before you go anywhere. If they are good head off and get the alt tested.
There is some testing info in my 86 manual. Here you go........ http://members.shaw.ca/agent86/Start...g%20System.pdf
