I've got the chance to get a valeo stage 1 clutch kit and a single mass flywheel for my 1990 6 speed, so
1) Never heard of Valeo clutches so any opinions on quality and benefits of stage 1 over standard welcomed
2) What should I expect if I go for the single mass fly wheel? Better performance? durability?
Any feed back greatly appreciated!
Valeo builds almost all the LT1/T56/ZF6 pressure plates (complete or cores) used by the various clutch vendors. Some companies sell them in their stock form as they come from Valeo, others, like Centerforce, modify them for particular applications requiring special features, or for use with a weird clutch disc. I have heard the stock GM version can handle 500 HP with a stock type disc. Being a pull style, as opposed to a push style, they seem to have plenty of clamping force for most street applications. From there, the clutch disc choice becomes the limiting factor, which will vary from one company to another. If the Valeo pressure plate can't hold onto a full kevlar puck style disc, you probably need to step up to a multiple disc race set-up.
The dual mass flywheel weighs around 38lbs. A steel, or iron, single mass flywheel will weigh between 16 and 20lbs depending on manufacturer (Iron GM F-body is around 16lbs, aftermarket billet steel are around 20lbs.). The aluminum versions are 12 to 13lbs. The clutch and Valeo pressure plate weigh in at 20 to 24lbs. The ZF6 dual mass flywheel wears out in two places (clutch surface and between the two masses) and cannot be rebuilt, and should not be resurfaced. I recommend the aluminum flywheel with its replaceable steel surface insert. The iron or steel versions would be the least expensive and still an improvement over the stock piece.
Valeo clutches are fine to use. Even Mcleod Industries that manufactures the famous street twin for the LTx and L98 engines uses a Valeo pressure plate with their street twins.
Just remember, it's going to sound like hell idling with the clutch engaged. Mine does anyway.
I was about to change my clutch and slave cylinder on my 01 c5 with 112,000 and I was wondering would be the Valeo stage 2 be ok. Only mods are long tube headers, air intake and a tune.
