ignition wire diagram 87
While reading up on the ignition, I came across some conflicting info which leads me to believe there were mid-year changes in the spark plug wire routing.
Number 1 cylinder wire is the forward most connector on the drivers side of the cap. The firing order proceeds from there in a clockwise direction (1,8,4,3,6,5,7,2)
Note that wires for Cylinders 2 & 3 cross in front of the distributor. The others are on their respective sides.
On my 87, the passenger side, rear wire guide is a part which is comprised of a "clamp" rising up along the back of the valve cover, then leads around to the the side and has posts for two plastic (2-wire) looms. The purpose of the clamp type device on the rear of the valve cover and the very back of the rear support was to recieve the wires stacked in order (8,6,4,2) from the botom up. This clamp may seem loose for replacement plug wires because the original wires had corigated plastic conduit on each wire to protect them from the egr crossover. I have emmulated this conduit on my new wires and they look great. As the wires come around the valve cover, wires 8 & 6 are routed down on the 2-wire loom going there, while wires for 4 & 2 use the other loom routing them forward. The front support also has 2 looms, one horizontal and one vertical which guide the wires right to their respective plugs.
On the drivers side, there is a 4 wire loom on a support bolted to the back of the head which you would install the wires in the order of 7, 5,3,1. That's from the bottom up. The rear/side support has a 4 wire loom to continue the horizontal run of wires, continuing the same stack as the above bracket. There is also a 2 wire loom for the vertical run of wires to cylinders 7 & 5. Wires for cylinders 3 & 1 continue to the forward support and are likewise routed to their respective plugs with a horizontle & vertical 2-wire loom.
Hope helps!
