Default My HSR modification

8 cm from manifold base to hood

Plenum is 10 cm.

Some grinding ...

Like this it just might clear the hood. I will lower the plenum a bit more just to be sure.

So what exactly did you do? Cut out the bottom of the plenum and slid it over the base? How hard was it?

I was thinking about going this route.

Yes, that is what I did. It was not that hard with a good grinder. I have spent about 4-5 hours on that now.

That is easy. When I am finished I am going to have them welded together. I don't see any reson to have a removable top.

Are you going to machine the runners flush with the plenum?

I've always wondered if just machining down the runners would allow enough room to clear the hood. I suppose you could even get them machined at an angle.

Jonas, are you going to use the Vortech on this set-up? I am very jealous of your fabricating skills!! Good work!

Thanks!

I have not decided if I am keeping the Vortech next summer or convert to turbo instead. Running without boost is not an option.

You could machine the runners down a bit, but I don't think long enough before you start cutting the fuel rail mounting holes off. If you machine at an angle you can not use the mounting bolts for the plenum. That was when I decised to modify the plenum instead of the base.

I will keep the runner length but I will radius the openings. Having the runners go into the plenum will actually increase the flow a bit.

It is bset to have small 'trumpets' in the plenum.

Wow, so finally a mod to help fit the HSRI under the stock hood of a C4. So you took off 3 cm of material from that base? Would you also have to retap the plenum bolt holes? I love your ingenuity! If I only had more time on my hands, but I have no grinding tools at the house, except for an old dremel.

Your teachers recall you as 'That Problem Child', don't they.

Nice tactic for finessing the HSR/C4 problem. Removal of
the bolt columns should more than make up for the plenum
volume lost to intrusion of the runnners. I never liked the
sharp edge of the runners either, now you can radius and
blend them or add mini velocity stacks. I can't think of a
operational reason for a 2-pc intake, it just facilitates mfrg
for the HSR.

Hope nothing rises up to stop you.

It's interesting. I wonder how many CFM it picks up if the edges are radiused. I flowbenched a HSR version I was working with, and for kicks, we took off the upper plennum box and pulled air only thru the runner of the lower base(sharp edges). It flowed worse without the plenum.

(please nobody ask about that black box sitting on top there )

Jonas, good work my friend! Show us the welds when you finish.
Should look like a row of coins. And show us the radius edges too. Should flow nice. Any plans to flowbench your finished product?

The base is not modified yet. I only enlarged the openings in the plenum to drop it over the base. I will not retap ... I will weld them together. The grinder I used is not much bigger than a dremel. You see it in the fourth picture. It is a $30 air tool ... if you already have the air compressor.

I might sell it if I decide to go turbo.

Sure! I don't have access to a flowbench, but if I get the chance I probably would do it.

And some more pictures.

A comparison between a 'stock' HSR and my modified.

And on the Corvette.

It is now more than 3 mm ( 1/8 inch ) space to the closed hood.
